Are they having a laugh?. It's done a fair bit of raining this week and it was belting it down all through last night.

Once Hawsewater and Thirlmere run dry, United Utilities can tap into Windermere ( the largest and deepest lake in England) , and various other lakes in the Lake District as well.
So there is plenty of H2O for all of us in the North -West of England.

Windermere is polluted.

After it has gone through multiple cleaning processes ( as all drinking water has to ) ,it will be safe enough to drink.

Really, even though there’s sewage overflow entering it! Why do we need reservoirs then, just get water from rivers and treat it.

Because rivers rise and fall depending on rainfall upstream. They can't be relied on, hence the need to dam them.

Because rivers don't have enough water capacity to serve all the people in the North -West of England.
It has to be stored in huge reservoirs/ lakes to meet the demand for it.
And believe it or not,the millions of gallons of water that flows south from the lakes is all moved by gravitational flow alone.
Our Victorian forebears who designed the reservoirs, tunnels and aqueducts to bring all that water were incredibly visionary to meet the future needs of modern cities and towns.

The only puzzling thing is that it was declared a drought last week, but they only decided to announce it publicly on Wednesday, not sure why. Media love to stir thing up though, the more irresponsible the better for many outlets. Been a while since we had a mass supermarket panic, what was it.. lettuce last time?

Still have the two car enthusiasts on our road washing their cars daily with all kinds of kit though. It'd take a zombie apocalypse for them to miss a day in summer of washing their cars. Followed by some revving at nighttime just to make sure it still turns on ok.

Given that we've just green lighted two new reservoirs, the first in three decades, and seven more to come, I do hope the focus shifts to how we protect and maintain our water in the near future, and not just how we get more of it to piss away. Dry spells like we've just seen are likely on the increase, it's be nice to know I can still flush a turd or boil a kekkle without having to check in future which UK postcodes are allowed to do so on a Tuesday during summer solstice, or having to upgrade to premium water user to use a shower in peak times.
