Based on a request from the Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the country’s other institutions, Dzeko was extradited to Bosnia and Herzegovina. From Sarajevo international airport, he was escorted to custody, and he will be handed over to the prosecutor in charge for questioning.
As a former member of the Zulfikar Special Purposes Detachment with the headquarters of the High Command of Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dzeko is suspected of the war crime committed in the village of Trusina near Konjic, on April 16, 1993. In the attack, the prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina believes 18 civilians were killed, as well as four soldiers of the Croatian Defence Council, who had surrendered. In this attack, several people were wounded, among them two children.
The Prosecution of Bosnia and Herzegovina established that the suspect Dzeko, with the last known residence in Jablanica, became unavailable to the judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that he was residing in the US, after which activities for finding him and extraditing him to the judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina begun.
Before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina there is an ongoing trial of six former members of the Zulfikar Special Purposes Detachment for the same crime. Charged are Mensur Memic, Dzevad Salcin, Nedzad Hodzic, Senad Hakalovic, Nihad Bojadzic and Zulfikar Alispago.
The indictment specifies that Memic, Salcin and Hodzic, as members of the Zulfikar Special Purposes Detachment, and Hakalovic, a former member of the 45th Mountain Brigade Neretvica, took part in the attack on Trusina and the murders of civilians and prisoners of war.
The attack, specifies the indictment, was led by Bojadzic, the then deputy commander of the Zulfikar Special Purposes Detachment. Defendant Alispago, former commander of the same squad, is charged with failing to punish soldiers who took part in the execution.
Dzeko was arrested in April this year, and has been remanded in the US custody since.
According to media reports, Rasem Handanovic is also arrested on US soil under suspicion of taking part in crimes committed in Trusina.
