Anyone use it? Need a bit of advice on it as I believe you can get shitloads of software off it free but not sure if it's safe or not.

Similar to Limewire, piratebay and many of the other P2P networks.
It's only illegal if you download / upload copyrighted material which you obviously wouldn't do......
Careful of viruses on any downloads.
Make sure you are well covered with a good virus checker and anti spyware though !!

EMule is similar to limewire, kazaa etc and so pretty unreliable aswell as very dodgy.
I'd recommend installing Azureus (you'll also need to get Java if not already on your pc).
Then get yourself to one of the many torrent sites, my first choice is Mininova. Just type into the Mininova search box, pick a result (the more seeds the better), download and double click your chosen torrent file, Azureus should then start to download your software/movie/music.
Probably sounds more complicated than it is, I've been using them for years and never once had a virus.
