7.5 magnitude earthquake & Tsunami warnings.

Early reports seem to suggest that the Tsunami won't be on the same scale as Indonesia/Japan but it must be bloody terrifying especially as it's happened in the small hours.

Visited Kaikoura a few months back with the family.

Stunningly beautiful place.

Hope it avoids a hammering. Christchurch is still a long way from being recovered. Last thing the area needs.

We were on the South Island three years ago. Christchurch was one of the strangest places I've been to, seemingly abandoned by the NZ government, desperately in need of regeneration I kept expecting to see tumbleweed blowing down the streets. Really depressing particularly when, as you say, the remainder of the island is stunningly beautiful.

Christchurch was eerie. They're seemingly trying to put it back together, but at this rate it will be a couple of generations. The main shopping centre is still a collection of glorified sea containers and the 'restaurants' are still serving up cooked food out of fast food vans.

September this year we flew to Christchurch and stayed there for a couple of nights before stopping over in Kaikoura on our way to Nelson, then the North Island. Beautiful country and great people, but Mother Nature really has it in for them at the moment.

Tsunami threat has been lifted, 2 deaths so far reported but many buildings down and severe damage to roads.

Haven't been to Christchurch since the quakes but the inlaws are staying there when they're over in March. The lack of speed in the regeneration of the city is an embarrassment.
