Europe’s biggest clubs attempt to kill off opposition to revamp Champions League
Ben Rumsby 12 OCTOBER 2016 • 9:50PM
Europe’s biggest clubs on Wednesday sought to kill off opposition to a revamped Champions League by agreeing to pay tens of millions of pounds a year to teams in the Europa League.
Following the backlash which greeted the announcement England, Spain, Germany and Italy had been awarded four automatic Champions League places from the season after next, the European Club Association (ECA) announced annual “support” of €60 million (£54.2m) for sides in the Europa League, as well as those in the qualifying rounds of both competitions.
The package was confirmed less than a month after the election of new Uefa president Aleksander Čeferin, who vowed to revisit the controversial reforms pushed through by his executive committee in August.
They led to the European Professional Football Leagues (EFPL), whose members include the Premier League, threatening to tear up its memorandum of understanding with European football’s governing body which prevents domestic matches being played on Champions League nights.
The EPFL effectively withdrew that threat after meeting with Čeferin last week and being given assurances its concerns were being addressed.
The ECA’s executive board also recommended on Wednesday that that the distribution mechanism of the solidarity payments to European leagues (€128 million, £115.6m) should be revised to allow for a more equal split among all top-division clubs in Europe.
Currently, 80 per cent of the total amount is predominantly distributed among clubs from the major European leagues.
“I am pleased that, within ECA, we manage to reach quick and simple decisions for the good of football,” says ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
“ECA is a strong and reliable partner of Uefa. Solidarity is a key pillar of the European club football model, which has always been supported by ECA and its member clubs.”
The EPFL on Wednesday night declined to comment on the ECA announcement.

Money, money, money, money...........none of this has anything to do with imprinting the competition, or improving the football on show.

I question if football and especially City were not such an important part of my life if I would bother with the game.

It is run by greed and basically corrupt people. There is not even any shame

We are a captive audience when it comes to City. But if you look at football beyond the Etihad - the England team, the broadcasters and pundits, PiGMOL, the FA, Uefa and Fifa - I would have found something else with which to occupy my time.

I'd add all the things wrong with the game played on the grass n'all; the diving, the feigning injury (i mean, what sort of man pretends to be hurt when he's not, it's the most pathetic thing i can think of a man doing), the time wasting, the lack of physicality, teams wanting the ball kicked out when one of their players goes down to tie his shoelace... This sport should be so much better than it is and the only reason i still have an interest is because of this ingrained love for City.

All this Champions league re-vamping and financial fair play has only happened because our owners have stirred things up.

Frankly the establishment were caught with their pants down, and have only just got round to retaliating.

The whole thing is CORRUPT and a bloody disgrace.

Wonder what City's position regarding this Champions League revamp is. Any club statements anybody is aware off?
When we had the last Points of Blue, we asked the club (via email as they don't talk to us anymore) about their attitude to the CL changes and whether they were one of the clubs in favour of a Super League.

I won't be holding my breath waiting for the answer.

I suspect the club is in favour of it to be honest. Looks like something your special friend Soriano would like.

I will be honest I don't really understand what is now happening. In principle and ignoring the fact that the Rags don't need our money, am I correct in saying the Champs League will give more money to the 'smaller' clubs in the Thursday night cup and in return the big countries, us, italy etc having the 4th spot as a right rather than it being a qualification ?

What I will say is like a lot of posters, it is only my love for City that keeps me attending. I am reminded of the saying the fanzine City Til I Cry had.......... Love City Hate Football

i could live without europe and the crap leagues just give me the premier league and both cups in england not much to ask is it

The term used by marketeers is "hostage" and it basically means they have you already and your focus should be on attracting new people.
