I think most refs have a different standard when giving our opposition penalties against us, than the standard for awarding us.
Also either Ederson or Steffen may will have to face penalty shootouts in the cups? I am not optimistic for Ederson ATM, don't know about Steffen?
Edit: just looked up Steffen's record saving penalties is about three times better than Ederson's, 37% as opposed to 13%! Maybe we should bring him on for a cl penalty shootout? Like Chelsea were going to do with Caballero against us, until Kepa refused! I assume Steffen will likely be keeper in the domestic cups.

Ederson has played 1 penalty shootout for us and we won, with him making saves.

There is more chance of you getting to take a penalty than Ederson being subbed off for a Champions League penalty shootout because Zach Steffen has saved a few MLS penalties.

Ederson saved one penalty in the shootout "Jorginho's low, weak shot" David Luiz hit the post, we almost certainly won the shootout because Kepa refused Sarri's instructions to swap for Caballero. Bringing on a specialist penalty saving keeper can win you shootouts, Caballero has a 33% penalty success rate.

Ederson's 13% penalty success rate is very poor, Ederson needs to improve in this respect or consideration given to bringing on a shootout keeper that is better, Steffen at 37% seems significantly better. Steffen has saved in the Bundesliga, MLS and in international matches.

I assume the squad can assess competency in training, but our lack of success in scoring penalties may be an indication there is little practice given to this aspect of the game?

We've won our last 7 penalty shootouts, 5/5 under Pep.

So clearly there is no problem with the practice saving penalties and the penalty takers aren't that bad.

I’d take him conceding every penalty we face for the rest of his career if he continues to perform the rest of his game as he is now.
I find it amazing that a keeper gets digged out for something where the odds are against him from the start.

Pep likes this post too.

You are ignoring our current penalty difficulties. Our current record of penalty conversion is shocking, there's been much discussion on this and Pep has admitted the problem and voiced his concern plus Ederson is looking unconvincing for saving penalties.

Agreed we have been successful in past cup penalty shootouts, but with the exception of the EFL cup final v Chelsea, which I discussed above, all our backup keepers, who were involved in those have now left.

As @Tricky_Trev and @Young Blue have already pointed out Ederson's penalty saving ability @13% is a concern. It's daft to ignore a weakness and pretend it doesn't exist.

Like most fans I am delighted with Ederson's distribution, composure and general decision making ATM.

I assume Steffen will be involved tomorrow, I don't have penalty saving concerns with him, hopefully it won't come to a shootout? ;-)

I think its only fair that Ederson is not in goal tomorrow.

We shouldn't rest on our laurels though! His distribution and composure is his strength and rightly he should be praised for that, he's best in the world at that. But players also need to work to strengthen aspects of their game which are weak, his penalty saves are such an area.

I love Ederson but all our players can improve and it's healthy and beneficial to be aware and work on these areas.

I don’t think you can do anything in particular to make yourself a better penalty stopper. There’s far too many variables when facing somebody from the spot. I guess he does what all professional keepers do in regards to studying the opposition player who takes them before a game and tries to give himself some small advantage but then it’s out of his hands and relying on a poor penalty is the best bet of saving one.
Never in a million years would I ever accuse a goalkeeper of having a weakness in his game due to not saving many. I honestly find it bizarre that it could be a stick to beat any keeper. Even more so these days where you can’t move until the ball is struck.

I'm not ignoring anything.

You're failing terribly to argue we might do badly at a penalty shootout with Ederson in goal despite there being absolutely fuck all evidence.

If you just took a few minutes to think, you'd perhaps notice that our penalty taking record in normal games is night and day to our record in penalty shootouts, and realise that trying to link Ederson being slightly below average in normal penalties to a potential record in a shootout is beyond pointless.
