Ederson (defensive midfielder Atalanta)

There would be a great balance to next year's midfield if it's Rodders , Ederson and a no 10 (foden, marmoush, kdb somebody new).

We are really set up long term now.

Top this season essential

Do you know what a DM is? I ask simply out of astonishment at your recurring description of Kova as one.
I think the difference here is that I'm just describing reality as it currently exists rather than a fantasy I want.

Kova is currently Man City's starting and best DM option. He'd be greatly helped by having an athletic box to box DM/CM next to him and a front line that better understands how to press in Unison.

Reports we are trying to do this in the summer, they said the same about Cambiaso.

Still think there is something here.

If all the other players caught the plague he'd be our best option in every position.

Well the fact that he consistently plays as a DM when De Roon isn't playing and even his natural position in the 343 can be defined as a DM then it seems an odd classification
He consistently plays in Central Midfield. They really don't play a DM based system. But in so far as one wants to force the DM designation on their team, De Roon usually is the more restrained of the 2. But even in Italian parlance they call him the Segundo Valante... which I've been in told translates to second wheel or second midfielder.

That said, where he plays for Atalanta isnt particularly dispositive of anything. What is more important are his traits. He has similar (albeit inferior in almost every respect) traits to Fernandihno. Athletic, combative, a bit of Brazilian technique and very good lungs. I think It is those qualities that some are salivating over.

Well, currently our normal DM is out, and he is currently the best option at DM. Everuone else is either worse or experimental.

That said, id have given Wright or O'Reilly a go. But then again, that would vbe fantasy. And as I've pointed out before, im trying to ground my opinion in reality :)

You're overcomplicating this. They are both midfielders who play from deep, one slightly more defensive than the other. They're defensive midfielders.

And it's Segundo Volante, is an Argentinian phrase that was popularised in the modern game by the 1970 Brazilian World Cup team who played a 424 with Gerson. The actual way we talk about this is the difference between a 6 and an 8.

He plays as a defensive midfielder who can operate as an 8 but also plays as a 6 when De Roon, who is the Clodoaldo of the two, is out.

I refuse to believe that a man of your passion hasn't read Inverting the Pyramid. Has a whole chapter on it iirc :D

It seems we are both describing a CM here but you prefer to call him a DM. I won't belabor the point. I think he has the traits to play as a DM for us.

Even though i would prefer a better CM personally.

Back when Ste Tudor ran The Daisy Cutter, I wrote a whole thesis on why modern English football language has failed to accurately describe players and that we need to move from positional based descriptions such as defender, midfielder, attacker. Its been a bee in my bonnet for a while and I see Paul McGuinness has picked this up in the last few years too.

hmmm - nothing really sets him apart tonight. The aged De Roon seems more enterprising,
Like I've said earlier in the thread, I've watched Atalanta multiple times and he has never jumped out at to me. I have paid closer attention to him the last few games and I still don't see anything worth being excited about.
