Elbow at Glastonbury

Elbow were magnificent last night - not many have the charisma of Garvey to have a crowd that size in the palm of his hand.

A much deserved triumph.

I agree mate, thought they were brilliant. Guy Garvey is a great front man, and Elbow are one of the least self indulgent bands out there, self effacing is more like it. Self indulgence was Chris Martin prancing about the Pyramid stage last night.

I can understand that Elbow aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I like them, I think they're a clever, subtle band. They don't have an ego and their interaction with the crowd is great to see. ''One Day Like This'' is one of the best tracks to close a set to. I thought they'd be good at Glastonbury and they delivered.

Fully agree with these 2 posts. Elbow were superb last night. Guy is a wonderful frontman, he's both grateful and humble of exalted position. He gives everything back to the audience and they love him for it, his voice is sublime too.

And he's no fraud - not like that tax-cheating, bog-trotting dwarf in stack-heels, hiding behind his sunglasses the night before.

Viva Elbow!!

It must've been a different rendition of "One Day Like This" to the one I saw them perform - flat, out of tune, and totally inferior to their studio version.

Garvey should either take some singing lessons or stick to singing in the fucking shower because he annihilated their one stand-out song last night.

On a brighter note, he did a better job with "Build a Rocket Boys!" but on the whole I hope he does indeed build a rocket and fuck off into hyperspace with the rest of his overrated band. IMHO of course ;)

I said it earlier in this thread - Chris Martin is a knob but Coldplay shit all over Elbow. Better songs, and far better live where they actually sound like they do on their records. None of this out of tune bollocks.

As lyricists - you just can't compare Martin to Garvey - Garvey's win hands down, Martin's said as much in the past...much more subtle and less obvious..... and I quite like Coldplay, got most of their LP's - I saw Coldplay with Elbow supporting in '05 at the Reebok and it was absolutely brilliant.

Seen Elbow more times than I can remember, they've never disappointed and as an earlier post said - the lads are humble, unaffected by fame and genuine. 5 consistently good albums, my only gripe is that on the current tour, they've massively ignored the first 3 LP's, but they've earned that call, I'd say.

When they won the Mercury, you could, without sounding trite, see the love in the room for em. Off to Belfast in August to see them - bring it on !

Good post mate, I agree about it being a shame they're mostly ignoring the first few albums, I love some of those tracks. The Mercury prize elevated them in to the big leagues, but they've been producing the goods for a long time and deserve their success.

Oh dear - a post which represents what must be an all time low for Off Topic.

"IMHO" of course.

Can't wait for the new season to start.

LOL - I'd be interested to know what makes it such a bad post. I call it as I see it mate, and Garvey was hopelessly out of tune on occasions last night. That's poor form IMO, and anyone excusing it needs to give their head a wobble because if you're in the music industry and you can't sing live then there's no excuse

And let me make this clear - I'd be saying the same if I was a fan of theirs. I liked both Hard-Fi albums a lot and was looking forward to seeing them at G-Mex in 2007. They were a huge let down because it turned out that the lead singer was useless singing live. Even the Arctic Monkeys gig at the Arena in 2009 was a disappointment because they weren't on their game at all, especially as Kasabian brought the house down at the same venue 24 hours earlier.

Not a bad post by any means, but it does suggest that you're someone who may have an extended no go zone around them at the bar on any given evening. Let me help you:

"Garvey should either take some singing lessons or stick to singing in the fucking shower"

"On a brighter note, he did a better job with "Build a Rocket Boys!" but on the whole I hope he does indeed build a rocket and fuck off into hyperspace with the rest of his overrated band"

"Chris Martin is a knob but Coldplay shit all over Elbow"

I couldn't care less whether Elbow are your thing or not (although I'm thinking it's a "No" for you!) but your immature and destructive language cheapens the debate to a level which makes you seem very rag-like. "IMHO" of course.

Fair comment. After all, we all find pleasure in different things and the world would be a very boring place if we didn't. But as a hardcore music fan I will say that being in tune all the time is not one of the major factors (for me personally) that contributes to a great gig. Of course, many will disagree and that is totally a matter of taste.

Corniness alert:
But for me it's about that otherness, that X factor (although that phrase has somewhat lost its meaning for obvious reasons) which some artists can deliver and others can't. I feel that Elbow are one of the few bands that can transmit a genuine feeling to the people who enjoy their music. Whereas technical ability (for me and probably most Elbow fans) is a much less important factor.

For instance, my favourite singer is Morrissey. A lot of people can't stand the guy (fair enough) and I would guess that as someone who appreciates technical ability you're not likely to be a fan of his. He is completely untrained and is indeed sometimes offkey and has a very unusual singing style. But for his fans this is a fantastic thing that makes him different and interesting. He can deliver genuine emotion, but he doesn't have the highly trained technical ability that many artists do. Some people like that; others don't.

Much of that was in response to some of the other comments on this and the Coldplay thread, some of them totally outlandish (such as Elbow blowing Kings of Leon away - priceless and stated without a hint of irony lol) and antagonistic to boot. Compared to some of the other comments regarding music on this forum I thought mine were quite mild to be honest ;) However, while I concede I could've been more tactful much of the sentiment in those comments still stands.

-- Sun Jun 26, 2011 8:44 pm --

I totally agree that some artists can "get away" with not being in tune all the time and I'm prepared to give anyone enough leeway to sing the odd note or 3 out of tune at a gig. As it happens, while I'm not Morrissey's greatest fan I do appreciate his music a lot (there are more than enough classic tracks in his back catalogue) and his live performances are by no means the worst. As I said, some people can get away with sounding out of tune in parts but I suppose it depends when they do it - One Day Like This is Elbow's main anthem and as such they should be pretty much nailing it, otherwise it'll just come across as sounding flat and uninspiring - that's how it sounded to me last night anyway.

I'm perhaps doing Elbow a dis-service because maybe a lot of their music isn't geared up for being played live. I cited the Arctic Monkeys gig at the MEN in 2009 and how I thought it was a let down. Their third album, Humbug, had recently been released and while it got a slating in some quarters I actually thought it was quite good. Thing is, they played some tracks off it and they didn't come across too well live when compared to their earlier stuff.
