Wherever you think of Southgate as a manager and I personally don’t think much, you can’t hide from the fact in the two tournaments he’s been in charge, we’ve reached a semi and a final. Nobody gets sacked for defeats in friendlies ( Nations League ) so if you want him gone I’m afraid you’ll have to hope his luck runs out in Qatar.

A new manager starting the day before the first World Cup game would find it hard not to have better tactics with a squad he’s never worked with before than Southgate has after six years.
So no serious suggestions as to who could replace Southgate right now - just 'well, anyone could do better with that squad'. Maybe they could, maybe they couldn't. If you want an example of why getting rid of a coach just before a major tournament is a bad idea, look at Spain in 2018 - they sacked Lopetegui two days before their first World Cup game because Real Madrid announced his appointment as their new manager. By all accounts Lopetegui acted like a bit of a weasel, signing a contract extension and negotiating with Real Madrid behind the Spanish FA's back, but the FA did not like looking like idiots, so they sacked him. Fernando Hierro, who was the sporting director at the FA, was appointed, Spain finished top of their group with less than stellar results (narrow win over Iran, draws with Morocco and Portugal) and then got knocked out to a poor Russian side on penalties.

Resting on his Euro progress getting to the final.

We have looked clueless against any half decent opposition since then. With all the players to choose from there has to be a better output than there is currently.
