England's young side hammered Norway in blizzard-like conditions to boost their preparations for this summer's European Championships in Sweden.

Tottenham striker Fraizer Campbell opened the scoring with a right-foot shot before Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Johnson doubled the lead.

Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone drilled a third past the hapless Lasse Staw from 25 yards.

And Matt Derbyshire grabbed a quick double to complete the rout.

Around 50 England fans had made the journey to see manager Stuart Pearce make seven changes to the side beaten by Ecuador last month but conditions were far from ideal as over a foot of snow fell in southern Norway prior to the match.

With the lines of play disappearing under the snow, Fraizer Campbell, who missed three earlier chances, struck the opener for England.

Can England's U21s win the European Championships?
The Tottenham forward, on-loan from Manchester United, won the ball well off a Norway defender and unleashed a shot from edge of the area which was fumbled by goalkeeper Lasse Staw before rolling into the net.

Staw, who once had a trial with Aston Villa, had no chance with the second, Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson doubling the lead with a low driven strike.

It was England who adapted to the snowy conditions better than their hosts and by half-time a four-goal margin would not have flattered Pearce's side.

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart had just one save to make in the opening 45 minutes and aside from that had so little to do that the groundsman managed to sweep away the snow in England's 18-yard box as the game went on.

Pearce made four changes at the start of the second half and it was substitute Derbyshire who scored with his first touch, only to see the goal ruled out.

Derbyshire threatened again but this time he lofted Johnson's cross over the bar from a couple of yards out.

With half an hour to go the locals voted with their feet and began to filter out of the stadium to dig their cars out of the huge snow drifts.

Huddlestone added the third goal of the rout when he smashed the ball past Staw.

And Derbyshire finally got himself on the score sheet with 13 minutes to go.

The Blackburn striker, on loan at Greek side Olympiakos, then grabbed his second and England's fifth three minutes later to round off a convincing victory for Pearce's side who will now face a far tougher test against France U21s at the City Ground on Tuesday.

It looks a bit on the snowy side up there!

Looks like Onuoha only played the first half.
