Had very high hopes for him, looked an excellent keeper a couple of years ago but there’s no doubt he’s not been great this season. Granted he’s playing in a weak Burnley side who won’t be doing him many favours but he’s contributed to that weakness on a few occasions.
Certainly not writing him off but hope to see big improvements from him.
Be pragmatic by not being successful with a defensive set up instead of not being successful with an attacking set up.
Gotta love England fans and their support of an absolutely average manager.
There's no denying Southgate is shite compared to top managers. But England fans are fucking moronic in their analysis and assessment of this England team. It's not the greatest generation we've ever had. We've got lots of good young players with potential and then some glaring weaknesses. The Argentinian team that won the World Cup did not load it up with attacking players. They used to do that, and guess what - they fucking lost. So the manager decided to load it with people who would work their arses off to allow Messi a free role. And they won. Mac Allister, Enzo, De Paul as a midfield three. Romero and Otamendi behind them!
From what I’ve seen one of the biggest issues is ironically the player who the whole world seems to be blowing smoke up his arse. Bellingham doesn’t look a team player to me, he wants to be the main man and in doing so I find it detrimental to the overall shape of the team. There's no denying Southgate is shite compared to top managers. Young keepers often have a poor season, not a big issue unless it becomes permanent. Like I said, definitely not writing him off because he’s already shown he has the qualities to become a very capable goalkeeper.Young keepers often have a poor season, not a big issue unless it becomes permanent. Remember a young Joe Coorigan getting dropped for McCrae.
I dont watch , bit like you ...Was tagged in to give my views and answered questions.
If you don’t like international football and don’t get behind England the bigger question is why do you watch and comment ?
I agree to a certain extent but in regards to Argentina, without Messi though they would have arguably been knocked out in the group stages or the R16. They were not pretty at all for the most part in that tournament.
He was by far the standout footballer in that tournament alongside Mbappe. Scored and/or assisted in every knockout game and got MOTM in every knockout game he played in including the final.
England just don't have that level of quality in the team or a player that we can look upon to build a load of worker players around him.
Our strength is in our attack and I think most see that the only way we are going to be a threat is if we do go all out this summer and play an attacking lineup and unleash our strength.
Playing this Southgate football of play to not lose first because our defence isn't all that and by doing that forcing average players into the side to accommodate this flaw will backfire in my opinion.
I'm trying to think of a current PL manager that wouldn't do a better job than Southgate with that squad. That's the point I'm making though. There's a black and white assessment of England and it's usually "the squad is the best ever" and "Southgate is shite". But in truth, the squad is very good in certain areas but weak in others and Southgate can't really do much about the players he has available, his job is to get the team performing to the best of its ability and in his opinion a more defensive setup in midfield is necessary in order to do so and he can point to the fine margins against Croatia, Italy and France as evidence to justify that.
But we can't remain the nearly men. He's a failure if he doesn't win the Euro's, but he joins a long list of England managers with that accolade.
And there's merit in what you say regarding the attacking approach. But it's not proven to be the way to win international tournaments, aside from France's win in 2018 perhaps.
I might see it differently to others, but there's one player England have that others don't - and he's the key to our success. Sir John Stones. The fact he can play as a hybrid CB/DM and has Walker covering is an asset that no other national team can utilise. Forget Henderson/Mainoo/Gallagher. Stones slots in there from defence. Then you can play Rice, Bellingham, Foden behind a front three. Flood the attacking third, if you lose it then press them and win it back or foul them. It also enables us to pass it out from the back more comfortably, because Stones is far better at doing it than Rice. For clarity, Maguire wouldn't be in this side!
