English Histree

I grew up on the Council end of a Wythenshawe road where the posh kids who included Michael Wood TV historian lived. We played football on the fields together and I still get a kick !!%£ out of watching his fascinating programmes about Saxon and Norman England . Peter Dobing also lived on the posh part and Big Mal lived just off it.

Wythenshawe - posh part?

So with the situation being what it is, more spare time less to do etc I've been trying to look more into things, of a historical nature. I am guilty of not knowing an awful lot about us as English so i've been reading up on us and it's actually quite fascinating. We are basically a mix of Danes and German tribe, whose language along with Latin and French forms what we have today. It also explains the rivalry with Celtic countries, as native Britains were forced to Wales Ireland and Scotland when the Anglo saxons settled. Does anyone share an interest in our histroy, and if so do you know any good books / documentaries to source?
Love British History.
The first Brits were probably those left on the land which became an Island after a massive land collapse in Norway caused a tsunami creating the English Channel circa 8000 years ago.
Growing opinion that the Saxons integrated as opposed to a full scale invasion. No doubt that other invasions diluted the blood stock.
Celtic is a fairly recent theory and is more a culture not race of people. Ancient Britons would be more accurate.
Read up on Neil Oliver’s book on Ancient Britain - very good as is the TV Series.

Baguley's private housing was posh if you lived in Benchill.
That’s what my dad used to say he lived on moat road in his youth .I
Was born just off Wythenshawe road had no idea michael wood was from the area loved his series on Alexander the Great

You may jest, but study of history seems to be dominated by the twentieth century now judging by what my kids bring home. Tbf it seems to go vikings, Romans ww2. I think some of this may be a well meaning attempt to sidestep awkward or boring stuff, but if we were educated properly in our roots as the op described as well as our empire, slavery, etc then we may gain a more healthy form of patriotism as a nation. Even the unfashionable practice of learning kings and Queens plus key dates by rote gives us a sense of time and context.
history education is worse than MOTD for gaining a balanced truth about what has gone down.

Can you please spell History properly in the thread title. It’s doing my OCD no good at all. Many thanks in anticipation.

I'm in my 70's now but as a kid Wythenshawe was a great place to grow up. I walked every inch of it delivering newspapers.
