English youth players at city

Just seen something on SSN about the england u21 players playing very few minutes in the prem and it mentioned that we didn't field and english player u21.

Was just wondering do we have any english youth players likely to make the break through?

Trust SSN to focus on us above other clubs ...tw@ts

I remember Gary Lineker doing a programme on the Barcelona academy. Similarly in Spain they had players with a great reputation but failed to produce anything at major tournaments. They then switched the emphasis with Barcelona concentrating on technique and restricting the size of pitches for kids to play on until a certain age, no above head height etc.

As a kid I remember being told to stand on the half way line or shoulder of the defender as I was quick, a long ball from one of the brutes at the back would then fly over and I would chase it down and attempt to score! In training there were some drills but it was mainly about big guys at the back and quick guys up front.

I have read comments from Gareth Southgate and it seems he knows what he is talking about (he is now in charge of youth programmes for England) and hopefully St Georges Park and the coaching training that is starting to happen will improve things here in England.

In terms of City specifically, we have a new academy being built and the emphasis will be on a Barca model. We have the knowledge and experience that can filter from the top down and then I am fully confident we will be producing some of the best technical players here in England.

I totally agree, I think our Academy will start producing some homegrown stars in the future, and we should churn out our own Wilshere's and Ross Barclay's. I think initially we will only have a few English players coming through, and mostly we'll be bringing European lads through our Academy, only because these are already used to the technical side of the game. In time when the reputation of our Academy grows then we'll attract more English lads to our Academy. With our soccer schools around the globe all teaching football the same way, then the future should be very bright for "homegrown" players.

The Dutch had several generations of brilliant young footballplayers. France did, Spain did, now it's Germany's turn.
Maybe the English FA should copy the Olympic model as it brought foreward so many talented athletes.

Soriano mentions homegrown talent. Unfortunately, there is a severe lack of British talent, so homegrown, doesn't necessarily mean British. In my opinion, (and I've mentioned this on various threads) we are way behind our european counterparts, coz they have community run clubs in every poxy hamlet, with cracking coaching methods and these clubs work closely with the local F.A.'s. Special talents are given the chance to take part in trials for the local selection. If successful, they are are coached by top qualified coaches, but are still able to stay at there local club. Whilst playing and training with the selection, they have great chances of being spotted by local professional clubs.
I think something like that happens at home too, but we have a severe lack of community run clubs. What we do have though, are lots of pub teams and thousands upon thousands of so called junior football clubs, without an address, or any decent facilities.

Hopefully some of the newly retired players can get involved with the coaching and setup at youth level. Having someone like Beckham and Scholes and to a lesser extent Carragher involved would be a great advert to the young players out there.

Scholes is one of the best technical players England has produced and Beckham obviously is an ambassador for the game. Carragher was a loyal servant to Liverpool it is just a case of whether any kids outside of Liverpool could understand what he was saying.

This doesn't concern me too much as football at youth level goes in cycles. We don't have anyone at U21 level because we have no 21, 20, 19 year old English players who are good enough. If you have a look at the 21, 20 and 19 year olds we have they are Harry Bunn, Reece Wabara and Kieran Kennedy. All not good enough for our EDS side so obviously not good enough for the U21's.

If you have a look at the next group down the 17-18 year olds every single one of them is an England youth international, Evans, Plummer, Facey, Hiwula, Glendon, Leigh, Gunn, Hutton, Cole.

You look further again at the 15-16 year olds and the likes of Bryan, Adarabioyo, Boadu and Humphries are all England youth internationals.

So there are 13 lads aged between 15 and 18 who play for us that are good enough to play for their country at that level. What should happen now is the 8 lads in the 17-18 bracket should be given the right development to continue playing for their country right up until the U21's. Instead what seems to happen here in the last few years is that they stagnate and even degress and get taken over by other lads their age at other clubs. That is either because there are no reserves games to play in (11/12 season), inadequate coaching staff (welsh and lombardo), terrible loans or we are bringing in foreign youngster after youngster who are taking the place of our promising english youngsters.

What should happen now is the likes of Evans, Plummer, Facey, Hiwula, Glendon, Leigh, Gunn, Hutton and Cole should be given the correct development and we should see a couple of them in the next U21 tournament in 2015, be interesting to see what happens.

I remember when we had a ton of players in and around the u21 squad: Richards, Onuoha, Sturridge, M. Johnson, Hart, Logan, Ishmael Miller etc. We don't really seem to have the English talent anymore
