Erling Haaland was on the verge of a double hat trick for City in the Champions League but it fell through at the last minute…

It’s a team sport
Cannot let player ego or records affect decisions
If he had stayed on and picked up an injury it would have been unforgivable and Pep would have been roasted by all and sundry
Substitution definitely the correct call
Haaland understands this

A fair point, but tbh I think Haaland is a goalscorer on another level entirely to Kun. Not saying he's a better player, but a better goalscorer? Almost certainly. 12 hat-tricks for City in ten years for Aguero. Haaland is on five 2/3rds of the way through his first season. I suspect he's got another one or two to come this season. He'll probably beat Aguero's hat-trick record by 2025. He's ridiculous and will almost certainly get closer to another chance to grab six than Kun ever did.

True, but Messi and Ronaldo have never managed 6 either despite 120 hattricks and nearly 2,000 goals between them.

No one's done it in England's top flight or FA Cup for 53 years. No one's ever done it in 68 years of European Cup.

It's got a lot to do with luck - probably more than skill.

Yeah it's unlikely to happen even then admittedly. Mad to think Haaland has 17 hat-tricks already in his career btw at 22. Wouldn't put it past him to smash Messi and Ronaldo's personal totals by the time his career is up.

I do think Haaland has that aura that you were talking about him potentially getting if he scored six already btw. We're in the social media age. The whole world knows he scored five last night and equalled Messi's record. I can guarantee you the whole world is now terrified of him ha

He got nine goals for Norway under 20s, and it’s been almost normal for him to get three or four per game in a high amount of games both for us and Dortmund (I think it was the same at Saltzburg too?)

That means we’re dealing with something different here, and it also suggests that it’s more skill than luck (or should we be asking him for the lotto numbers every week?), of course there will be an element of both but the proportions are different for different players.

For those reasons, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind he will break that record at some point. He’s 22, he shouldn’t even be at his peak yet.

I absolutely think Haaland should have at least been given another ten minutes to see if he could get six. He'll get his rest on Saturday and Alvarez will get a chance then. Sure Haaland may have picked up an injury but that's true every time a player is on the pitch and we can't take off everyone every time a game is wrapped up.
