I see this as relevant to the Etihad Campus and the future projects from companies such as Sharp in their software development.

I may see it wrong but the signs are there for me in what they (Sharp) aim to achieve being in Manchester with this 3D form of Tourist destination being one benefactor, leading to them rolling this out in classrooms everywhere.

Are you relating this to the 'Sharp Project' which, forgive me if I'm wrong, has nothing to do with the company 'Sharp'? There's a historical link with the company in East Manchester, hence the nod to the name (I do indeed wish I'm wrong and the 'real Sharp' are back in town).
Eon Digital have landed in East Manchester (big coup that) and are leading the 3D digital stuff, but there are also rumours of major investments/projects by some of the world's leading digital companies (see 'Project Tomorrow'). The announcement on that has been stringing us on almost as much as this collar/expansion malarkey!

I think when other premiership teams are discussing their own 60,000 expansion/rebuilds (however *pie in the sky they may be), then a project with the scope of Manchester City's is almost certain to be looking at that very soon.

Best thing to do is befriend GXCity and ply him with absinthe :)

I thought I had made it clear that they were educated guesstimates?

On the one hand we get told that the roof will be a massive issue, integral to the structure etc etc and it can only be done incrementally and then there are others who say it wont be the thick end of ten years (as I guessed it to be).

I truly hope I'm wrong but to get the current stadium to 60,000 seats, an increase in excess of 25%, will take time.

Even the cleverest people can only have so many bodies, so many cranes, so many concrete pumps and so many steel fixers working safely.

The start date will surely not be before 2015? ***GUESS*** with 4 stands that may each take a season to complete if all goes to plan that gets us to 2019 ***GUESS*** but we surely will see more than a Wolves style development? ***GUESS***

If we drag in the need to develop the Collar Site (which has a defined period in which it MUST be developed under agreements with the council) that would perhaps sow down one side of the ground ***GUESS*** adding another year and getting us to 2020?

And of course that all depends on it going to programme and starting as early as 2015 ***GUESS***

The alternative is that we see a development of the ground whilst we pay home matches elsewhere, perhaps an extended Mini Coms, for 2 seasons? ***GUESSS***

As I said earlier GX, I await the announcements with excitement.

It would make a lot of sense if in future could you please post in the above format, it'll makes it a lot easier to sort the wheat from the chaff, thank you!

I fully appreciate that there won't be a start this summer and that all we can expect in 2013, if anything at all, is a fairly minimal shoe-horning in of a few extra seats in the corners. However, it was the suggestion that there's only an "outside chance" that the stadium "could be a 60k venue in 10 years" that horrified me. In other words, you're suggesting that

We're selling out every league game at present. The requirements of FFP would suggest that we really need to increase the uptake in corporate areas or premium seating. To do so we would probably need - as is being discussed on the latest posts in this thread - to convert areas in level two down the sides of the ground. If we shift the fans currently in those places, there needs to be somewhere for them to go to. In other words, the stadium needs to be expanded.

Moreover, we have a fanbase with a relatively high average age, a function of losing out heavily to United among the generation raised when they swept all before them while we were clueless no-hopers. What better way to attract the new generation than by being able to offer affordable prices to help us fill the extra places?

I appreciate that there can be nothing major until 2014. But if you're right that there's only an outside prospect of us having a 60K stadium as far ahead as season 2022-23, then I'd be very, very disappointed with that. I'd hope for a coherent, phased plan to start the expansion next year, once the training facility is ready, and to finish as swiftly as is viable in the circumstances.

There is planning already in place for behind the goals to increase the capacity to around 60k and I reckon it would take two summers to do it..

Telegraph Sport understands scheduling concerns and fears that serious harm would be caused to the pitch look set to scupper the prospect of England 2015 naming the stadium on its final list of venues.

Hosting matches at the 75,000-seat ground was central to organisers’ hopes of selling the 2.9 million tickets required to fulfil the £80 million revenue pledge made to the International Rugby Board.

Discussions have already begun with Manchester City to limit the damage by holding games at the 60,000 capacity Etihad Stadium – talks that are expected to bear fruit – but there is no hiding the loss of a potential 15,000 tickets per match in sales.

Inaccurate reporting, or is the much expected ground ex[ansion due to be in place by 2015?

It's just been on talkshite that the rags were supposedly first choice but they knocked it back because of worries over how it would affect their pitch.
We are definitely hosting it and our pitch won't suffer because it's a hybrid with interwoven plastic and better able to cope with heavy use.

They play 7 rugby league games over two days at magic weekend and the pitch held up well. Yes union got scrums ect but 2 or 3 games should be no problem. The scums pitch is shit at the best of times anyway. The 60k statement interesting maybe it's part of the deal might also get some money towards upgrading the ground to.

They've just had a report on sky news saying that "by 2015 the etihad will still hold 16,000 fewer fans than Old Trafford". They may know something we don't!

They play 7 rugby league games over two days at magic weekend and the pitch held up well. Yes union got scrums ect but 2 or 3 games should be no problem. The scums pitch is shit at the best of times anyway. The 60k statement interesting maybe it's part of the deal might also get some money towards upgrading the ground to.

The scrum in Union is destroying pitches as seen at the 6 Nations games in Paris and Wales. I saw a game of Union at Headingley this weekend and the damage to a new £million pitch was brutal. Scrums are being re-set several times and lasting in total say 10 to 15 minutes during the game. Hopefully the scrum Rules will change by the RU World Cup in 2015 to make the game a better spectacle as well as preserving pitches.

City could get Sale and another team to test out the potential damage to the pitch ( say close to the touchline) before committing the RU World Cup in 2015.
