I’m not just talking about this tournament though. As far back as I can remember rag players have been picked to represent their country whether or not their form deserves it, and still it continues to this day.

The fact that there will probably be a bigger selection of City players in the squad right now is neither here nor there: Southgate is a yes-man and his football is bloody awful - utter dross in fact. And if I choose to ignore his dull, safety-first style that’s my choice…petty or not.

but we finally have a manager who picks more Man City and less Man U/Liverpool players than ever before and you can't be arsed with this England

what many people forget is that International football is pretty dross, i've watched Brazil with all there star names and flair play some dreadful football at time, so many just watch England and think we're dull because they do not watch other international teams play, tournaments are tight affairs, lesser teams tend to sit back and defend for their lives and if we only win 1/2-0 everyone still sulks.

Southgate had no answer to Croatia in the World Cup Semi finals. England got away with it in the previous round against Colombia and leading up to the present tournament don't look that convincing either despite the players in the current squad (the same as any tournament the national side had played in for the past 50+ years).

Whilst he's tactically inept, Southgate's off field ability to unite the squad deserves credit. It's been an issue with England for years, but he's got them all singing from the same hymn sheet and deserves credit for it. He largely picks on form and he gives young players a chance. That's something all England fans have been desperate to see for years. So he also deserves credit there.

My issue with him is that his tactics are influenced, in my opinion, by whatever English club managers are flavour of the month. He went with the pass it out from the back Pep influence, even using Walker as a CB which Pep had tried. We didn't have the midfield quality for that. He then tried the Klopp pressing and getting the ball forwards quickly approach. And I reckon he's keen to go with the Tuchel back 3 and wing backs, with a counter attack now. I'm guessing that from the squad he has picked.

We could have done with a more settled 11 and system in my opinion. Experiment with formations, but also enable the players to get some familiarity. He's picked 4 CBs to cover a 5th in Maguire. And he has two DMs and Bellingham should Hendo not make it. And then he's got three RBs on top for some reason.

With the extra three squad players he should have thought about past England losses. Get a specialist set piece/penalty take in - Ward Prowse. Get a different type of striker in there - Ings. We have Trippier who can deliver a good set piece, and Foden for example. But you want a deep lying playmaker like Ward Prowse if you're a goal behind late on in a game. Someone that can thread the ball to the likes of Foden/Mount/Grealish further up the pitch. Otherwise they'll come deep and be faced with a defensive wall.

He's picked two too many defenders because he's not sure on his system and I guarantee we'll be a goal behind in a game and looking at the bench thinking who do we put on to get us that goal or make us that chance... DCL/Saka is unlikely to be the answer.

Having ranted, I'm fully behind him and England and it's coming home!

Nope. But not just this England. We’ve been poor for a long time, so it’s not just Southgate’s reign that has sent me into this state of sheer indifference to the national team.
If England are playing any sport in which I have an interest in I’m enthusiastic and full of optimism, of course I am. The recent nul-points in the Eurovision Song Contest pissed me off because I want my country to be the best at everything. But I cannot, in all sincerity, say my cup runneth over with joy when I see a seemingly never ending parade of rags and dippers selected for my country, when anyone with half a brain cell can see that they are simply not good enough.

You might watch every game with ‘three lions’ tinted spectacles on, but I know crap football when I see it and I shall exercise my right to ignore it when it’s on.

'Brown: Scotland can win Euros'

Any of our Scottish fans on here care to explain if Mr Brown has been drug tested?

It’s coming home until we lose against Croatia…
If they get beat by Croatia and that’s a big if as the Croats are not what they were then it suddenly becomes a problem as the jocks will be well up the game against England and that is by no means an easy game . In theory France should win the tournament quite easily as they never really got out of third gear for the World Cup but I think Spain will have a big tournament.
