Out of interest, how many europa places are up for grabs this season? Is it 5th and 6th place only or 7th as well? Not a negative post btw, just wondering incase worst comes to worst.

It's 5th in the league
+ winner of Carling Cup (if United qualify for Europe through league, then 6th place.. so yeah, 6th place)

+ winner of FA Cup.. if winner qualifies for Europe through league, then runner up gets the place. If runner up qualifies for Europe through league, then 7th place. Also, if Pompey take either runner up/winner place, they don't qualify so it gets passed along.

Most likely, 5-7 in the league all qualify.

1 place for the league (i.e. 5th place)

1 place for the FA Cup. It goes to the winner unless they finish in the top 5, in which case it goes to the runner-up. If they finish in the top 5 too, it goes to league placement. If they finish exactly 6th they get the place from the FA Cup but the table looks EXACTLY the same as if it had defaulted to the league. Only way that place isn't staying in the top 7 is if Pompey reach the final, unless anyone still believes Everton or Brum can sneak in the top 7 and the FA Cup winner/runner-up is the team who they shove into 8th. So

1 place either goes to Man Utd (Carling Cup win) or if they get in the top 5 (pretty obvious) or 6th given the FA Cup place not going to Pompey, defaults to below the above places.

So we're probably good for a European place right now.

Now here's the interesting bit. Last year, the rules for the Fair Play League changed. Previously, as some may know via the way we entered the UEFA Cup last season, it was top country submits the top (non-European placed) team for a place, and then two other countries with very good records get put in a lottery draw for the second and third places. Germany and Denmark took them when we entered last. BUT now the rules say top three ranked countries all get the three places. Only teams not already qualifying for Europe get in. Last time I checked, when the results were last released (for mid-January) England were ranked 3rd in UEFA's Fair Play League. Top of England's own Fair Play League was all the Big Four teams except Liverpool, plus I think Spurs were in there and maybe Villa. We were 8th and 'Pool 9th or something. Who was currently in line for the 3rd Fair Play place?

Burnley

I laughed. No kids, I am not making this up.

For anyone who cares, I updated my description of the FA Cup placement, because the previous one was frankly a load of rubbish.

Also, for anyone who cares: Google says that as of only last week, new Fair Play league tables were submitted, and yes Burnley are still in line for entry into the first qualifying round.

Also, apparently we've rocketed up to second in the Premier League fair play table. Can't complain.

wouldn't be the end of the world for me IMO if we are in this competition, as long as we give it a real go and try and win it like we did last year.

As a fan, it means more games to watch and more for us to discuss on this fair site. Not a bad fallback competition if we miss 4th, IMO. There's some pretty good teams in that tournament.

Last season and the one before, europa was our realistic target, now it could be or worse case scenario, just shos how far we really have come,

i'd be happy with europa league again, enjoyed it last time round, was amazing, prefer champions league obviously, but i'd settle for europa if it ended up like that.

I think Burnley need to be in the Prem next season to qualify

Not necessarily. Ipswich have shown before that you can play in Europe from the second tier.

and why can't portsmouth enter the europa league if they get to the final of the cup?
They did not apply for a European Football License fearing they would be out of business.

they did apply, and were rejected for the exact reason you mentioned

Didnt't they change the Rules so that the Runner Up doesn't get into Europa (Assuming the Winner has already Qualified). Im sure I saw that somewhere, so then would the place go to the League, 7th Place?

You could be right, it was certainly raised when the UEFA Cup became the EL. However, I think the FA rejected the idea in the end and went with the traditional winner-runnerup-league progression.

Yeah they possibly did reject the idea, I know they were deffo discussing it anyway. Personally I would rather see it go to the League as its over a longer period and its on merit, you shouldnt qualify for not winning (imo)

i dont know why people keep saying how far we have come in regards to last season and the season before with europa being our main priority.we havent progressed its just the media hyping us up as usual.

Ok rag.

On a side note, haven't really watched too much Europa League this year so i may well contradict myself here but seems the name change and marketing have revamped the competition a little bit. Perhaps with Liverpool, Hamburg, Juve up until Fulham have helped it, dunno just seems that way.

I'd like to see Fulham or Hamburg win it personally although without having gone through the old rule book if it means less places if we fail to get the champions league i'll happily support Hamburg for the win, european football of some sort is a must next year, preferably champs league!

Maybe 5th to 17th places in the Prem and the promoted teams from the Championship should play-off at the end of the season for the EL spots next year? The following year it could be expanded to include the rest of the Championship and the promoted teams from League 1.
