While the money these days is obviously crazy compared to the 1960/70's, footballers at the top level were on a lot more than your average man in the street once the minimum wage was abolished. One who had a ten year career at the top unless they were reckless with their money should have been comfortable.

At the last City film show at the Dancehouse Theatre on Oxford Road a couple of years ago, @Gary James showed some footage from a documentary about City filmed by students from Salford University for BBC North West. This was from 1977 and so would have preceded Granada’s City! film by a few years.
It included footage of Peter Swales sitting down in his office with Dave Watson to discuss his contract and what he was being paid.
No word of a lie, Swales suggested to our England international centre half that if he wanted more money, he was free to go out and get himself a part-time job on the side.
I don’t think anyone present had ever seen this footage before and the place was in uproar, everyone in tears of laughter at Swales’ petty, tinpot, small time chiselling.
It summed that man up perfectly. As did his decision to be interviewed in front of a portrait of himself
