Samba mission: City dispatch Begiristain to Brazil to seal £11m deal for Corinthians midfield dynamo Paulinho

By Alan Nixon | 21 dec 2012 22:32
Manchester City supremo Txiki Begiristain has flown to Brazil in a bid to sign Corinthians midfield dynamo Paulinho in a £11million deal.

Begiristain is in Sao Paolo in a bid to thrash out a move for the hard-running star, who is wanted by Roberto Mancini for the title push – and to make up for Yaya Toure’s absence.

Paulinho is Mancini’s top target for the role of adding more strength to his side, as revealed by Mirror Sport last week, with director of football Begiristain dispatched to close the move.

Corinthians are celebrating their Club World Cup win over Chelsea, but Paulinho, 24, has an escape clause, at a fixed price, according to insiders in the deal.

City want to thrash out an agreement quickly and process a work permit for the Brazil international, who would, ideally, join before Toure heads off to play for the Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

Mancini has been told he has to balance the books in this window, but the chance to land a leading player at a decent price would be backed, although the exit of a squad man or two could help.

There is urgency as Paulinho has other admirers, although Mancini has been on his trail for months – and the player is aware of the possible move.

This feels different than last season. We identify deficiencies ahead of time and then work hard proactively to avoid them.

May be early to say this, but thank fuck Txiki and Ferran.

The rumoured £11million buyout clause sounds dirt cheap, it wouldn't get you much in England.

From another newspaper:

Manchester City are exploring a deal for Corinthians midfielder Paulinho.

Sporting director Txiki Begiristain flew to Brazil amid speculation he was preparing an ambitious bid to bring Neymar from Santos but Sportsmail understands he has targeted fellow Brazilian Paulinho instead.

The 24-year-old, who is valued at around £20million, has been linked with Chelsea in recent weeks and is understood to have a get-out clause at a lower price.

City want re-enforcements with key midfielder Yaya Toure due to go to the Africa Cup of Nations and summer signing Jack Rodwell struggling to shake off persistent hamstring problems.

In my opinion he'll end up at Real
Where's he playing at real? Left? Nope ronaldos there, right? Probably not di maria is there and has settled quite well there, up front? Again unlikely benzema and higuain are much better options up front

Would be much easier for him to play in a rotation with sanchez/Pedro/tello

Corinthians have just signed Renato augusto could be a replacement for paulinho even though augusto play's further forward

I doubt we are in for any midfielders because we have Garcia and Rodwell.

You buy a South American midfielder it will take half a season to adapt - look at Oscar. I'm not sure he has had a good League game yet for CFC.

If we buy players in this window I think they will be ones for the future

Whoever it is he has gone to sign....As in another post its showing these guys want the personal touch..

Again mansour and mubarak....dear me we are lucky to have these guys..

What a masterstroke getting ferran and txiki...

Whoever we are gonna sign..its gonna be top quality..

I would be a little suprised if we was not trying at least to see if there was a chance for neymar while he is over there..

Happy times for our club indeed. We have the 2 best people over seeing the true development of our great club.

The next stage of development for us is not only to improve on the pitch, but to generate the vast amounts of revenue through shirt sales.

This is the process that Soriano & Txiki went through when they ran barca. They signed one recognised international superstar in ronaldinho, that amounted to shirt sales going through the roof for the club. But also helped transform the style of play on the pitch for the team.

I agree with the above statements, yes we will sign players for the future, but I also believe that Txiki will be looking to at least try and bring in a young superstar player. Past history shows that all the major clubs around the world ie. Barca, Real etc have done this.

Fingers crossed : )
