Extreme Away Days

coldest - Middlesborough 2010 in the FA cup, was absolutely baltic! blizzard on the way to the ground (not helped by taking a wrong turning or two and getting lost). at least we won though

Blackburn FA cup was awful, i remember travelling down from newcastle via sale, journeys took forever, game was shite
Middlesbrough away was also my coldest. Had to go to the toilet for respite.

Wettest was Barnsley away mid 80s was living in London so was designated driver. Pissed down all the way, away end no cover. Soaking wet, nil nil draw. As I was driver could not even have a few drinks after the game.

Chelsea, full members final was probably the spiciest. Kicking off everywhere.

Whilst Middlesbrough away was well cold. Arsenal last season was very close, but wind chill factor was less.

Most bizarre was travelling from London to Blackpool for a midweek game in a transit van. About ten of us and it was a metal floor there and back. Plus we got attacked by locals in a pub before the return journey. Think it was either league Cup or full members.

Most drunk was late nineties away at notts county third division. Got totally wasted, they kept feeding me pints of beer. Think we drew 1-1. But it is all a blur.

Weird... Blackburn in the cup. Coach dropped us about a mile from the ground, had to run down a hill, cross a railway line, another muddy field and shimmy across a river/stream on a pipe. Could only see one end of the pitch. Think TC scored a couple.
Strange.......Juventus away, loads of empty seats , chose one, little old Italian came up to me, pointed to his ticket and said thats his seat.
Coldest ...Stoke away at the old Victoria Ground. They had pulled the stand down and it was just rubble. Slipped down the embankment at half time. Was half way home before I realized my hands after warming up had been cut to ribbons.
Memorable...... Many, getting in Wembley for free and being paid for it against West Brom. Got a job clearing straw and snow off the pitch.
The 4-3 at Newcastle. The Seven at Reading. My sons first away game v Gillingham at Wembley.
Fights.......At Sheff Utd, Newcastle, Stoke, Liverpool, Leeds, Burnley, Wolves, Millwall, West Ham, Rags...........not been to Exeter.
Loudest.........Middlesboro semi final at Gods green acre.
Wetest.......Ipswich again at Maine Road.

Looking for views about your away day experiences. Of those games you have attended, which was the fullest or emptiest, furthest or closest, scariest or friendliest, first or last, best or worst?

I will kick us off with two offerings:

Coldest - April 1989 - Shrewsbury, night league match, bleedin' freezing, my shocking Mini Metro wouldn't start after the game, last out of the car park by a long stretch, good job we won 1-0 (Morley)

Worst - March 2007 - Blackburn, FA Cup, lost 2-0 to a mediocre Rovers team, Blues fighting with each other on the way out. The depressing day when it finally dawned on me that unless something unbelievable and wholly unforeseen was to happen, City would not win another trophy in my lifetime

Horrible at blackburn. Huge following and real optimism that this could be our chance. I felt exactly like you at the end. Just a realisation that its never to be.

We’d played United the day before at OT and went into town straight after. City centre was a battle zone, and we caught the midnight mail train to Euston that stopped fuckin every where. Kicked off on the train as well
There was also 2 prostitutes on the train doing blowjobs for a fiver in the toilets. Made a killing on that journey!!
Then all morning and afternoon, just running battles with Chelsea inbetween pints
The eighties, youve just got to fuckin love’em!

Most violent a friendly v port Vale 70s mayem all day Langley and crumpsall / blackley lads at there best wettest Newcastle away soaked to my undies macdonald last minute winner. Farthest lodz Poland best trip juventus 76 8 lads in a van for a week became alcoholic best atmosphere stadio communal. Best memory's Newcastle 68 Gillingham just for the night in the East end qpr winning the league. Memory's just to many

Brighton away at start of 81/82 season got absolutely pissed on in open end, froze my bollocks off all the way home on the special,we lost 4-1 too..

Me too....wouldnt let us out.

Howard Davies ( Former Deputy Governor Bank Of England ) on a TV programme a few years ago said that was the second time (first at OT when we sent them down) that he had found himself seeking shelter in a brick toilet....." Its at times like these you wonder what you are doing with your life " he said.Always makes me smile.

My longest away trip was to Vienna in 1970 for the Cup Winners Cup Final against Górnik. We went on the three day option with flights, two nights hotel accommodation as a package. All was well on the first day there apart from being chased off a tram because we tried to get on via the exit door.

We went to the park by the stadium with the big wheel that anyone who has watched the ‘Third Man’ film will be familiar with.

Arriving at the stadium we found it to be a big concrete bowl with no cover at all apart from the main stand. It was fine for the first half but then the rain came bucketting down. I was totally drenched right through to my underpants. After the match, I went back to the hotel and had to change all my clothes before setting out to get drunk.
