FA confirm Southgate will stay on until after Euro 2024 (p 101)

Not sure that goal is Maguire fault. As I said in an earlier post, iMHO Declan Rice was more culpable for the goal than HM. When you watch the phase of play before and then leading up to the cross he is marking Giroud and if he doesn’t hesitate he is in the position where Giroud scores from. It also was a phenomenal cross.
 
Sadly he won’t be going knowhere :( he fits the FA criteria.......... get us to tournaments while being a yes man ..........he fails at the Euros then he should just go
 
In a world where elite football is now all about possession based, high press, free flowing football Southgates ultra conservative tactics look woefully out of date.

Flair players are restricted and look fustrated.

His tatcics are very ridged and he plays not to lose rather than play to win.

He must go
 
Not a Southgate fan and he probably should go. But I expect the FA will reward failure with a new contract and pay rise, and Southgate will believe his hype once again, and the fans will expect football "to come home" once again! So if the waistcoat was to go who realistically would the FA deem suitable ? Remembering the FA seem to have different criteria in mind other than just a winning manager. I can see slippy G and fat Fwank being considered.

Yeah agreed; I can’t think of a single English manager who could replace him.


Except maybe Gary Neville ;)

No decent young manager would want the job, its a part time job, what do they actually do for the months they have no games ?

Not really. The manager can only do so much.
I don’t rate maguire at all. However what are the alternatives at centre back. Coady. Ben white. Tyrone mings.

The goals last night were small mistakes by Pickford and maguire.
 
Interesting my lad (25) cant understand the sack southgate brigade. Thinks he has done great. Thought his subs were ok, thought Foden didnt offer much ! Thinks Foden should play central of not playing there dont pick him . (Note to self must check DNA).

I think this could be a generation thing I am not bothered about England really. I think southgate is clueless and one lucky bastard. I am not bothered they got knocked out.
Southgate now has to rebuild this team nearly 50% of that starting 11 wont be at the next world cup. I dont think he is the right person to bring on a group of young talented players. Southgate will never get the best out of Foden, it was clear Foden needed to be in the middle.

My lads mates are pro England Iol think England are great etc. I just cant support players from the rags or dippers it doesnt feel right.

Maguire does ok because England are a step down from premier league standard. Henderson, Mount, Sterling not good enough. Rashford was only in the squad because he players for utd. Now way does another player with his scoring stats makes the squad

Should southgate go ? For me yes but who is available.
 
There is no team at this world cup that is tactically advanced so he is no better or worse than many of his compatriots. So its then down to how well does he manage the squad as an entity and I think he does that very well based on the noises from the players. How well does he utilise the talent he has - England have world class forwards for sure, a decent back four and yes I include slab head in that when he is mentored by John boy. What is lacking is our midfield. But what options does he have? Bellingham looks a shoe - in. Mount? Maddison? Gallagher? none of them fit to lace Modrics boots. So i'm not sure what he could do that was radically different.

What I do think he lacks is game management and the ability to change things around where we are behind to change the game. His subs yesterday were pretty ineffectual and actually the starting eleven were our best team.

Then who would replace him. Howe? Potter? Not a chance in hell. Both of them building their careers nicely at well funded premier League clubs. If not those two, then who? Who would be better than Southgate?

ps. I freely admit to being a member of the Southgate out brigade but the more I have thought about it during this competition the more I suspect that he is as good as we probably could get.

Not exactly an inspiring list of candidates ! The two at the top of the list won't want it at their stages of career .

No decent manager on the way up is going to take the job. And the FA are only ever going to give it to someone with a big name.

I'd keep Southgate.
