Heat is another fav of mine but yeah, more of a crime film than a 'gangster' film. Some belting acting in that, even by Kilmer!

Although not strictly a 'gangster' movie, 'Freedom Writers' is a true story about the racial struggle and gangs of different races and nationalities in Long Beach.

Personally I think the gritty realism in English gangster movies beats anything the yanks offer up, although Goodfellas is very good.
