Gangster films aren't really my scene. Too often, they go overboard with the violence in that someone's getting blown up every 2 minutes.
The seminal film-noir ones are decent, but then again, they are decent for their time. As film-making's progressed, their original power is significantly diluted. In order, the best in the genre are from what I've seen:
1. The Godfather part II - Possibly the greatest perfomance in cinematic history by Al Pacino. It beats the first film because it is a more intense character study of Michael Corleone.
2. Goodfellas
3. Fargo
4. The Godfather
5. Pulp Fiction
Donnie Brasco, Snatch, Eastern Promises, Training Day, American Gangster, Casino, Collateral are all good films too.
