Feelings towards the current side

While Leeds had their share of hard men they were a bloody great side who never received their due from the media. Leeds commited the sin of not being the rags and like our side of that era was ignored. The sixty nine seventy season they could have won the treble and finished up with nothing. Like ourselves a decade later against Spurs , Leeds carried the hopes of the north into the cup against Chelsea the best final I can remember ultimately losing to the joy of the London media sound familiar. Will always remember the Leeds side of my youth, just sorry they often beat us.
I respect your view but I'm afraid I can't change mine. They had some good players but, to me, they are the team that invented cheating (at least in England). Allan Clark was a despicable diver, Hunter a total thug (as was Giles). They might have won more if they had played honestly.
Brian Clough famously told Revie that his achievements were cheapened because of the way his teams played. Clough told the Leeds players their medals were worthless. I'm with Clough.
Clough won two European Cups with Forest (with less resources)...that's two more than Leeds.

They were a bunch of cunts, with a bigger bunch of cunts supporting them. That is all.

There's a reason why, for most football fans of that era, one of the most popular chants was: "We all f...ing hate Leeds."
Rags of that era had Crerand, Fitzpatrick and Stiles, yet unlike Leeds of that time they were never criticised by the media. Who fed a climate of hostility against Leeds. Papers and TV had constant wank fest over rags and dippers, the more things change the more they stay the same.

I agree about the media and don't have much time for Crerand and Fitzpatrick or Tommy Smith at Liverpool but I always thought Revie set up the whole Leeds team to cheat and kick people. The United team was in decline by 69/70. I enjoyed watching City take Super Leeds apart 3-1 at Maine Road when they arrived on a long unbeaten run.
To me the greatest sides may well have had some physical players but they tried to play entertaining football. The only truly great English sides I have seen were Liverpool 1980s, Forest (for two years), United in the 90s, and us in 2017/18 and 18/19. These teams tried to play football the right way.

I admire you're optimism but I think we've seen the glory that was Rome built here 2010 to 2019. Now we're into the Decline and Fall of the empire unless we replace the great players who carried us through those heady years.
Those great players were not great players when they signed for City. They became great as individuals and as a team at City. There is no reason to believe it will not happen again. But people want it now so what can we do ?. It would cost 7 to 8 million £ to instantly replace great players with players who are great before they sign for City. £ 100 m,+ for Mbappe, Haaland, even £113 million for Joao Felix at 21 (being subbed off) at Atleti, £ 60- £ 80 million for established "reportedly great" defenders = another £ 300 + million. Oops only £ 200 odd million for 2 great midfielders + a "maybe great" one to replace the aging Kevin. Google "world's best midfielders" for a hearty laugh, Fernandes (the skipper), Henderson !!!, Thomas Muller, Havertz, would we pay our last £ 200 million on 3 of them. Popular opinion is these are currently the world's great players, £800 million gone and no great goalkeeper to cover for Eddie, Alisson at a cut price £ 75 million maybe (if we forget about the hacking). So there we have a team of great players, but we cannot now play in the PL or Europe because of financial rules. What do we do now. Maybe go back and start again and buy replacement players who have the potential to be great, add a small few nearly great players if the budget permits and mix in the few rarities that are potentially great players in the Academy. That formula looks familiar.

I remember them well. I was in a small (115 pupil) secondary school at the time and we used you play 7-a-side games between 3rd years, the largest class, v. the rest. I think 7 of the 3rd years were Leed's fans (maybe the Johnny Giles effect). Needless to say this was before access to UK media turned most of the country into red fanatics. Good times when wearing a City badge meant chatting with other lads about Frannie's legendary penalty record etc,. Harmless stuff when most of us knew a decent amount about our own teams but only what was in imported newspapers or crackly radio about the other teams. Access to cross channel tv especially down the east coast changed much of that. Our national channel showed only FA Cup final's and 2 of the 3 European cup finals , sadly not the one City won. + a few internationals. Leeds were the villains to me and I remember hoping that Chelsea would give them their just desserts, it was an unexpected treat that the replay was televised live. As of now that is the only non City , FA Cup final I have much memories of except Sunderland in '73.

I see a pattern developing since those days ;)

current side misses a massive presence like yaya, I think our goals tally would be up a little more.

we know how a game changing big player like yaya is missed, but he certainly banged some big game goals in and never looked pressured at all when put on the spot. And we would have put that pen away against scousers to, yaya knew how to take a pen.

Absolutely, the only players I'd be gutted about losing as the current squad stands are Kev, Foden and Dias. Everyone else has a price for me and if a good offer came in we should consider selling. Sterling very high up on that list and if someone offers between 80-100m we should seriously consider it
Could not agree more, Sterling for me is nowhere near as good as the hype that surrounds him. Ball control poor, no tackling, loses the ball too often, takes the wrong option too often. Low percentage of conversion of chances. Enough said. Mahrez although not perfect has far more control and a football brain as well. Gets the ball across on more occasions than not. We need a big centre forward to give us more options and maybe the odd headed goal.

Now lets be careful chaps! We aren't where we want to be at present - true but the why's and wherefores are complex. Here's a few thoughts. The early signs from Jesus were that he could replace Aguero in time. He's not kicked on to that level. Bernardo of 2 seasons ago looked like he could replace D.Silva. He's not kicked on to that level. Mendy looked brilliant for Monaco but after the injuries he's not kicked on to that level. Mahrez at Leicester looked like he could easily replace Leroy (albeit in a different style). He hasn't. Kompany's departure (though understandable for him) came a year earlier than the club might have thought. Stones's personal problems had an unpredictable effect on his performances. The gamble on Gundo returning to the fitness levels he had at Dortmund hasn't paid off to desired effect though he remains a good player. Sterling will always be one of those players who has devastating patches mixed with anonymous days but he is still so much better than when we signed him. Foden is coming through very well but at his age can't be expected to control every game in which he plays. (Think Gerrard at the same age). Now I'm not whinging or making excuses but remember that L'pool are not the same team this year and no one else is consistently winning. Teams have worked out ways to stop us but we have the best defence we've had since Komps left. All that's need is for the goals to go in against the top teams.I'll tempt fate and say we still have a great chance to win the league, even if we don't play every week with the style and panache we had 2017-19, which was based in my opinion on Fern, DS and KDB performing as if they were 5-6 players for 90 mins every week. I do wish we had more players with the grit and determination of the Mancini team but that's modern footballers for you. I venture to say that the only big transfer mistakes have been not going the extra mile for VVD and not buying a 3rd striker of the Dzeko variety. But what do I know. Keep the faith!

I agree with much of your post mate but not all.
Sterling has during his time with us been better than when we signed him, but i wouldn't say that he has this season.
Yes we are keeping clean sheets recently but without being disrespectful part of that run consists of Olympiakos, Porto, Marseille, Burnley, Fulham and some shot to pieces Rag team who we sat deep against thus devoiding ourselves of hardly any attacking play.
If we had more goals in the team and more creativity then i don't think we would be "bragging" about our clean sheets too much. Spurs game being the prime example of the need for more goals, not just the habitual 5 v hapless Burnley.

The clean sheets are a massive improvement regardless of the opposition. Any Champions League opposition is a tough test as they're all clubs who're used to winning games (regardless of the quality of their leagues).

To put it in perspective, last season Olympiacos were drawn in a group with Spurs (whom they scored 4 goals against) and Bayern Munich (whom they scored 2 against).

Last season we conceded 4 goals in the group stage and only kept 2 clean sheets. It's a huge improvement.

Burnley have just beaten Arsenal away and we saw how good Fulham were against Liverpool. United are rubbish, but lets not kid ourselves, they scored a lot of goals!
