I don't disagree that he's not at his optimum but having constant difficulty controlling the ball and misplacing simple passes imo isn't something I'd necessarily associate with a lack of sharpness. It's not like he's been dropped into the middle of the game after 3 months on mars. He has still trained, he's still gone through rigorous warm ups before the game.

I do agree that he played well in some big European games last season but he also very neatly cost us against PSG. I'm not saying he's a bad player, I just think there's too big of a drop off in quality between Dinho and Gundogan and Fernando and Delph, especially in terms of ability on the ball.

He doesn't misplace simple passes, he's the best simple passer at the club.

Fernando & Delph are utility players. If every player is a star we have the situation we have now got with Joe Hart, in every position.

Most puzzling for me is Nasri. I thought that Nasri would fit very well into Pep's system but it seems he's on his way - lack of effort on Nasri's part?

No idea why people keep saying ths about Nasri, yes he has talent, does he work hard off the ball NO, can he be a problem in the dressing room if not happy YES, is his attitude that of a sefless team player NO ... Was never going to be a Pep player, yes he's good on the ball but just doesn't fit the mould in every other department!!!

He's more of a destroyer than a creator, win the ball give it to Kev or David to do their magic. A bit limited but I like him for his attitude.

Get the knives and forks out for nandos time now is it? Fernando and Delph have been surprisingly good under Pep so far when we have seen them. Instead of focusing on the few occasions in the past where they have been unconvincing, remind yourself of Boateng and Savic before writing a player off as if you have them completely worked out(no chance they'll ever be good enough for this level type assertions)like some blues are prone to doing. Maybe Pep likes Fernando, some of the training vids could support that idea, same with Delph in a way.

He misplaced two or three very simple passes against Steaua, which could have put us in bother had they been decent enough with the ball. To me utility players are all round players with ability in all areas. Fernando to me is a specialist player who isn't good enough for a top tier side.

Would he be good enough to be a squad player at Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern? Not a chance. Neither would Delph. If we want to compete with and better these teams, we need more quality in the middle. Simple as that.

Ridiculous to mention a couple of mistakes by one player, as if it never happens to the others. The first thing that happened last week in the away leg, was Fernandinho getting caught on the ball 20 yards from our penalty area & the Stauer player leathering in a shot which Willy didn't even move to save. He also did the same in the World Cup, for Brazil v Germamy.

Nonsense that Fernando has been any more prone to that than any of our other midfield players, it happens often to Silva & DeBruyne. It happened to Stones every week last season with Everton.

Fernando is a decent def mid who did ok for City last season & would do ok for Barca, Real or anyone else if asked to fill in amongst their team of stars.

He is never going to be first choice for a top team & neither will many of Barca or Real's squad players. Some now play for Stoke.

So which player don't miss place two or three passes ?
Please enlighten us .

Moreover, he'd be central, and in Pep's system, that's a hugely demanding job. The central player needs to be aware of everyone in front of and behind him at all times, must know before he receives the ball where he's going to pass it to. He must move to the proper quadrant when we're in possession and then must take up the proper position within the quadrant to create passing lanes. When the ball is lost he must either press the ball (if the ball is very near) or, more typically shadow cover to cut off passes. It's a hugely challenging role in Pep's system.

Fernando is an excellent destroyer, and as some say he could get the ball back and then short pass it to someone. But this alone is only part of the skill set Pep looks for in a defensive midfielder.

He's a squad player, who is there if we need him, or to help us rest the key players.

If he had all the attributes people are talking about, he would have to play, all the time, therefore someone else would have to be left out.
