A world cup comes once every 4 years, he isn't gonna be in the brazil squad so he is hoping to make the Portugal team which in my opinion he shouldn't make, it not his ability that should keep him out its the fact he hasn't play a minute in qualifying! If a player doesn't help you get there then they shouldn't be going! But joining a great team like city could be a once in a lifetime, he could have had his pick of clubs and got paid a lot more if he was on a free, a lot of top clubs would have been interested in him as cover but with a 20mil fee no one will pay that for a squad player and the wages he would get will be reduced because of the fee if he does leave.

It wouldn't surprise me if there is still a clause in there which means if City offer a certain amount then Porto need to accept the offer, maybe the amount which Porto demanded in January, this way everyone wins, Porto get to play him for the rest of the season, he probably goes to the World Cup and City still get him at a much reduced fee from what Porto would initially want.

To be honest, I couldn't ever see him sticking it out at Porto until the summer without being pressured into signing a new contract with Porto.

This proposed signing is just silly. He's only gonna get into the first team is Fernandinho is injured. 30 odd million for a seat on the bench. Meanwhile, Gareth Barry is putting in man of the match performances week in week out for Everton...and we have loaned him out in favour of a ponytailed juggernaut instead?
Barry played at CB?

Looks as though City have made some expensive mistakes. Barry could have been a good backup for midfield, we didn't need MDM and could have got by with Lescott, Nastasic and Boyata as centre backs.

At least they'll have chance to put this right in the summer window, and I'll be glad when the mistakes are put behind them.

Those who expect a player to jeopardize his WC chances just so he can join another club, are silly. Sure he might fancy joining City. But never so much so, that he would be willing to give up the opportunity to play in the WC.
He's never played for Brazil so why would he expect to do so now?

Because he has only just become eligible. He's widely expected to start for Portugal at the WC
According to Wikipedia, which may or may not be creditable, "In December 2013, Fernando became a Portuguese citizen. However, under article 8.1 of the FIFA statutes, he was only eligible to represent Brazil internationally as he previously played for that country at under-20 level.[5]

That's clearly nonsense though, given that you can even have full international caps and swap nations (if they were only friendlies, like Diego Costa)

Apparently he has signed a new contract for Porto. Here is one of the articles:
<a class="postlink" href="http://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premiership/blow-for-manchester-city-as-transfer-target-pens-new-contract?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TransferTavern+%28The+Transfer+Tavern+Home+Page%29" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.footballtransfertavern.com/p ... me+Page%29</a>

if the buy out clause is 30m Euro's I think we can safely say he won't be coming to City in the summer.

Probably told to sign a new contract or rot in the reserves!!<br /><br />-- Sun Feb 09, 2014 7:41 pm --<br /><br />

Maybe City will regret not paying Portos asking price in Jan now - I doubt we'll get anyone of his ability in the summer for £10m if thats what Porto were asking - Double whammy really, we could really have done with him right now - We paid £30m for Fernandinho ffs I'm thinking the City board should have swallowed their pride & got the deal over the line .... BIG mistake IMO

Same with the isco deal. Should have paid a bit extra - to whoever - and got over ourselves.

All sounds like bollocks to me, I think the City board got a bit too cocky on this one & thought they could shaft Porto by getting him on a free in the summer after feeling Porto were trying to screw a few extra million £s out of us... It seems to have backfired on them & they look very silly knowing we could have got him for around £10m it will deffo cost us a lot more than that in the summer now. How f*cking stupid, especially as we were/are absolutely desperate for a defensive midfielder!!!

This deal may well have been the difference between winning the PL or not.

City board dont seem to be learning about never standing still !!!

OK, we have missed the chance to sign him for a reasonable price BUT our scouts should find another alternatives.

Yes but the point is the summer is too late - Chelsea look favorites for the league now - their run in is easier than ours & they seem to gaining some steam !!!<br /><br />-- Sun Feb 09, 2014 10:58 pm --<br /><br />

Has this guy actually signed a new contract ?
Seems to be a few stories again over here that we will sign on free daily star and mirror.

Can't see anything on Porto website which would confirm this??
