Can now be registered Umtiti has taken a pay cut for a longer contract
So Umtiti was owed ~€10m for the rest of the season before his contract ended.
Now he's signed a 4 year deal for €10m total. Which means he's only being paid €2.5m this season, freeing up €7.5m for Torres.
The kicker is that Barcelona and Umtiti have agreed a fee that Umtiti will be paid if Barcelona want to break the contract in 2023.
And that will be where he gets paid back for his help in cooking their books.
Pushing back costs just means they'll be struggling for years to come.
They've signed a player that isn't even ready to play yet and to register him, they have had to renew a player's contract who most people wanted out the door.
If they don't make the Champions League this season that's another dent to the finances.
Dembele leaving for free in the summer will actually help them. Can't help but think they should have loaned Torres out and registered him when Dembele goes.

Dembele leaving on a free helps with the wages, but fucks them in terms of fee they paid for him. That's why they were desperate to get him to extend. Probably with a similar out like Umtiti.

So a player who they've been trying to offload for the last couple of years (at least) signs a longer deal which in effect gives him a pay cut just so they can register a new signing. Nothing dodgy about that at all!
