FIFA annual Club World Cup proposal

Out of interest I had a look at the FIFA council who voted 25-7 in favour of the new CWC with 24 teams.

Besides President Infantino
and 9 UEFA members
the remaining members are from:

Bahrain, Bangladesh, Philippines, Korea Republic, Japan, China PR
Madagascar, Egypt, Tunisia, Guinea, Burundi, Malawi, Congo DR
Canada, Panama, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA, Cuba
Paraguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina
Vanuatu, Fiji, New Zealand.

Democracy is a wonderful thing, but I wonder how Vanuatu is involved in the discussion.
I guess Infantino knows how to handle democracy perfectly.

It's how FIFA have operated for years. Throw around money at the smaller members and get them to support what the exec want to do. Been highly successful, if ahhh somewhat corrupt.

Think it's relevant to this thread (or should we have a separate City/FIFA vs Cartel/UEFA thread?) The cartel clubs are desperate to counter FIFA's moves:

[@JorgeCalabres/@partidazocope] UEFA & the European Club Association (ECA) are discussing a new European Super League that would begin in 2024.

- The competition would begin in 2024 and spell the end of the Champions League as we know it.
- 32 teams. 2 divisions. 16 teams per division.
- Division 1 would comprise the 16 teams shown above, split into 2 groups of 8.
- Top 4 from each group advance to quarterfinals. Bottom 2 in each group are relegated to Division 2.
- Games would be played on Saturdays/Sundays.
- League games would be played on Tuesdays/Wednesdays.

[@Ultra_Suristic] Some more by COPE on that European Super League 2024 which Football Leaks had lift the lid on:

- 16 founding clubs
- €900m yearly in TV rights
- Real Madrid & Barça fixed slots
- ESL to be played 9pm on weekends
- League games played mid-week

All of Italy’s top teams are standing by their plan to boycott a 24-team Club World Cup.

FIFA plans to debut the new-look tournament in 2021, but European Club Association (ECA) President Andrea Agnelli made it clear the sides he represented - Inter, Milan, Roma, Napoli and Lazio, as well as his own Juventus - would not budge on their combined opposition.

However, Agnelli did confirm the ECA’s support for a ‘Super Champions League’.

"We have now launched the process to develop a vision for the future of UEFA club competitions"
"We are at the heart of world football and we must drive change. There will be a new Super Champions League, in collaboration with UEFA."
"We are against the new 24-team World Cup and we ask for less windows for national teams."

It looks like ECA's board plan to boycott the FIFA CWC until they launch a renewed 'Super Champions League' to hinder the possible development of FIFA project and evade the competition. Of course, the real intentions are not pronounced in the official press-release, all the talk is about 'health of players'. UEFA have expressed its solidarity with the position taken by ECA:

https://apnews.com/724dcdbae0224ee6bdbf03cbb7f6be32
"The European Club Association told The Associated Press “our clubs won’t participate in the 2021 edition of the Club World Cup, and we will assess participation in editions after 2024.

European officials don’t want FIFA to add new competitions until there is an agreement on a new international match calendar starting in 2024.

In a statement to the AP, UEFA says it “shares the ECA’s view that the international match calendar in 2021 does not provide any realistic option to stage a 24-team Club World Cup and that it should furthermore not be played at a time when players should have a well-deserved rest period.”

UEFA added that it “supports the views of its stakeholders and has the duty to protect the health of players.”

UEFA confirmed “the European members of the FIFA Council therefore unanimously voted against the FIFA proposal".
