The finale of Group B
Monday 21st June 2021
Both matches kick off at 20:00 (BST)
As it stands:
- Belgium (assuming they finish 1st) would play: 3rd in Group A: Switzerland or 3rd in the others currently is D: Croatia, E: Spain, F: Portugal. Outcome dependent on which 3rd place teams qualify (see table below).
- 2nd place would play Group A’s runner up which is Wales.
- 3rd place in this group would face France or Sweden as it stands (opponent dependent on which 3rd place teams go through, see permutations table below).
3rd place permutations:
FINLAND v BELGIUM
KO 20:00 (BST) at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Capacity 50%, approximately 34,000 fans.
Coverage begins at 19:30 (BST) on BBC 1. no information on the guide other than commentary from Jonathan Pearce and Martin Keown.
Referee: Felix Brych (GER)
A point secures Belgium top spot in the group and you’d maybe expect them to rotate in this match but early reports suggest Martinez will go strong with De Bruyne set to start in this one. He changed the game when he came on versus Denmark, setting up the first and scoring the winner. Finland were poor in one of the more forgettable games of this tournament versus Russia. They’ll be hoping to try and get a draw in this match which should secure them a place in the next round, a loss probably won’t though.
Goal scorers so far:
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium & Inter) – 2
Thomas Meunier (Belgium & Borussia Dortmund) – 1
Thorgan Hazard (Belgium & Borussia Dortmund) – 1
Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium & Manchester City) – 1
Joel Pohjanpalo (Finland & Bayer Leverkusen) - 1
RUSSIA v DENMARK
KO 20:00 (BST) at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark. Capacity at 67%, approximately 25,000.
Coverage begins at 19:30 (BST) on BBC 2. No information other than commentary from Guy Mowbray and Danny Murphy.
Referee: Clement Turpin (FRA)
Russia have had a fairly unnoticeable tournament, got battered by Belgium and scraped a win in a poor game versus Finland. However, they are in a position where 1 point will probably be enough for them to go through. Denmark are just in a position where they have to win. There are all sorts of permutations but in the event of Finland losing to Belgium, Denmark have to beat Russia and score more than Finland do to finish 2nd. If they go through in 3rd place I think they need to try and get their goal difference to zero, so a 2 goal win. Based on Denmark’s performance versus Belgium, they would have easily got through this group if those events in the first game didn’t happen.
Goal scorers so far:
Aleksei Miranchuk (Russia & Atalanta) – 1
Yussuf Poulsen (Denmark & RB Leipzig) - 1
