Football’s coming home

Why, where's it been.
It’s been around the world. But it’s come home a few times since we started the whole thing.

It was in England where association football was first founded as an organised sport with rules and regulations, it was here that the world’s first Football Association was formed in 1863, it was in England when Wanderers played Royal Engineers in the first FA Cup final in 1872 (the world’s oldest competition), Scotland v England was the first ever international game played (also 1872), it was at Royal Hotel in Manchester that the first Football League was formed in 1888, England is described as “the home of football” worldwide, a Germany v England friendly last decade saw the Germans put up a banner that said “THANK YOU FOR INVENTING THE BEAUTIFUL GAME”

Then football spread around the world. British emigrants Thomas and James Hogg went to live in Argentina and founded their first ever football team (Buenos Aires FC). In Brazil, Corinthians were founded as a ‘copy’ club of English non-league side Corinthian-Casuals. In Italy, Genoa were founded as a club to represent Englishmen abroad; and AC Milan we’re founded by Herbert Kilpin from Nottingham… there are dozens upon dozens of other examples, all of which contribute to football being the world’s number one sport.

Football has come home three times for the 1966 World Cup, the 1996 European Championships and for a major part of this 2021(2020) European Championships; like when the Olympics went home in 2004 when Greece hosted the games.
