Jack Wilshere in the papers today photographed doing so.......

What are peoples thoughts on this from both a performance aspect as well as the role model factor?

Personally I don't think its acceptable on both fronts, impressionable kids dont need to see their idols smoking as many will then think its fine and follow suit.
Also you simply cant be at your fittest if youre a smoker and, subsequently,it will affect your level of ability.

Mario was another who was very fond of a crafty one after every game, him and chappy used to sneak off to the groundsmans yard.........

I just don't see why an athlete, who should want to be the very best they can be and,as a highly paid footballer and entertainer, has a duty to be,would want to hinder their health and career?

It depends obviously you wont be peak fitness if you smoke but it his choice. the club could ask him not to and offer him help. As for being a role model, he has never asked to be one and probably doesn't want to be and the papers dont need to publish the picture as its hardly newsworthy anyway

I'm surprised it's not banned in their contract. After all, there are other things banned, like motorbikes.

Up to the individual. It's their life, their career.

I believe given their privileged lifestyle they have a duty, and responsibilities,to adhere to,fans spend thousands every year watching their idols and should expect them to be performing at their very best when doing so.

Being photographed smoking in public doesn't fit the bill.

-- 04 Oct 2013 08:40 --

Unfortunately that honour comes with the job.

In reality how many kids will see the picture of Wilshere smoking? How many of them kids other than Arsenal fans will see him as a role model? His duty and responsibility is to play for the club and win matches. Wasn't there some survey that said 60% of footballers smoke. Defoe has never drunk or smoke since he turned pro but he is still just a very decent pro and not World Class like a Balotelli

I believe many kids who witness him in an England shirt will idolise him and want to be like him, besides, just one,who sees that picture and thinks smoking is ok,is one too many in my book.

I'm not comparing players,i'm stating individual talent and the fact that smoking will detract from a players ability to be the best that they,as that individual, can be.

Would a player like Defoe have achieved such a level of fitness if he had been filling his lungs with smoke? i'll guess we'll never know for sure but i'd suggest his lifestyle and professionalism has definitely aided his cause.

Smoking will not effect ability, fitness sure but it doesn't stunt the footballing brain otherwise Johan Cruyff would of been a complete dud of a footballer
As far as I understand football clubs have a fitness test they have to pass. If he is passing that then he is fulfilling his contract, have to remember a lot of footballers do just see it as a job. Just lucky for them its a stupidly well paid job and that the media want to sniff through there bins

But but but.... Rock stars smoke and it would surely effect their voice/singing ability. And i still want to be a rock star you could say they are my role models or (billy) idols if you will.
Its apples and oranges mate.
As long as they do what they are paid to do well, wheres the problem?
Yes being a role model comes with the job, so shagging about and getting bladdered, throwing cash around like confetti is ok, but a fag is a cardinal sin?
Footballers (in the majority) seem to live quitte clean lives but there are mire than a few that do a whole lot worse than a sly cig.

I guess we'll just have to disagree. As an athlete myself, albeit amateur...... I've always strived to be as good as I could be and that means giving my all and doing things right as much as I can - i'm a winner, subsequently, anything else just wouldn't sit right.

Your right circles is what are going round in. If I had the opportunity to play I would strive to keep as fit as possible to make my career a long one.

Down to the individual in my view.

Wilshere could smoke 20 aday but due to more important factors such as Genetics he performs far better on the pitch than a rival player who doesn't smoke.

Knowing how the Gutterpress behave anyway, I'd put it down that he might smoke a couple a day, not 20, and this wouldn't have a major effect on his performance.

But as I said... More importantly Genetic factors play a bigger role and his natural lung capacity could be greater than a non smoker.

As for being a role model... its the media who are making him a role model, they choose to either portray him as being a smoker or show him 2min before eating a fresh salad with a bottle of water.

My view exactly, however, the world would be very boring if.......

-- 04 Oct 2013 09:34 --

But why even offer and provide them with an alternative?

Or 20 Minutes later when he is smashing 2g's of coke up his nose off some birds minge

I can't see how you can be a professional footballer and play to your maximum, while being a smoker. How the fuck can you run out a game...?
