Forced marriages are to become a criminal offence under plans to be unveiled by Theresa May this week.

The Home Secretary will launch a consultation on creating a specific offence of forcing someone into a marriage against their will. In 2010, the Forced Marriage Unit dealt with 1,735 possible cases of forced marriage, although the number of cases is thought to be significantly under-reported. A new law in Scotland allows courts to issue protection orders specifically tailored to the needs of the victim, with a breach of an order a criminal offence. David Cameron has called forced marriage "little more than slavery".

In a separate move, Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, will promise tougher laws to tackle domestic violence, including changing the law to cover under-18s.

Obviously, they have always been illegal in this country but the new legislation will decide that any marriages that are forced marriages will not be recognised under British law.

This is great for two reasons. Firstly, forced marriages are slavery in another form and there are many who meet over here, go on holiday, get a forced marriage then come back with a legal certificate which was recognised. This will no longer be the case.
Secondly, this will be a good idea because the type of people who would force somebody into a marriage are the type of people that we do not want in our society. This will make them reconsider moving back here in the first place.

Good idea by the Government, fully behind it.

Not good enough Dave.

Marriage should not be recognised full stop.
