I'd have to agree with your assessment. The only thing that worries me is his height like you said. I rewatched when we played Shaktar and the guy looks smaller than Silva. If you watch Fernandinho he wins a lot of duels in the air because opposition teams try to lump it up field. I don't know how Fred would do in those instances. He does have excellent skills on the ball. He gets rid of it quickly when under pressure which is what is needed from that position. I'll trust whatever Pep decides.

I wonder if Pep would just use this guy as & where he fit in, rather than signing him specifically to replace Fernandinho.

You mention the age of Silva & Fern, then there is the workload on top of KDB, it might just be that he wants him as another body in there, effectively to replace Yaya & whoever plays the best out of the group, gets more games.

If he takes Fernandinho's spot in a game, we are much weaker at set pieces & the long ball down the middle, something Pep is already aware of as a weakness. But as you say, he is a bit like Fern used to be, so he could play next to him.

The other thing that Fernandinho does it drop back in the CB position to allow Stones or Otamendi to bring the ball forwards on occasion. I can't imagine a 5'6 player being too comfortable doing that.

That often is a momentary switch. Any player can do that. It simply part of the requirements of the scenario.

In almost 100% of those situations nothing happened until the switch got rectified. It's a simple cover while the player on the ball ( a CB) drives it up field.

Your height has little to do with whether you can accomplish this.

It's what actually happens in games, quite a lot. Fernandinho this season is often in position as a spare cb.

Loads of us know that without even questioning it but you are incapable of watching football & evaluating the simplest thing without some kids' site writing it down in a table for you.
