French politics

I only mention it as I find it weird you vote far left, they are knocked out so you vote for the exact opposite.
That's like voting for someone like Corbyn and then Farage.

yeah - people are odd aren't they? I'd suggest that guy was in the "anyone but Macron" fraternity but possibly not thinking/understanding the possible outcomes - think UK farming and fishing + Brexit

The far left and far right are two cheeks of the same arse.
As in demented fuckers ? But seriously you surely can't hate one man/party to vote for anyone but Macron. Just abstain. An 'expert' on the news this morning says it is the people in rural France that hate him. Petrol, food for animals, everything is going up, govt services have been slashed so they struggle and see the parisians as the rich few. For that reason they all switched from left to.
Taking an extreme, over here you want all the industries nationalised, no nuclear weapons and 75% tax on the rich, Corbyn is knocked out first round so you vote for Farage. It's not logical. The French are weird.

Give him a fortnight and the Parisians will hate him - again!

Katie Adler on the Beeb with some utter bollocks again…. Macron wins hollow victory with only 58 per cent of the vote ! What percentage of the vote does a UK PM ordinarily get ? 40 per cent… she is fucking hopeless.

Does seem to be a theme in UK media. Analysis of the Le Pen vote, France fractured and divided (yeah, it’s France), yet no analysis of what a Macron victory means for Anglo/French relations given Macron openly detests Johnson.

There was precious little analysis prior to the election of what a Macron victory would mean for Europe and the UK specifically, which was weird given a Macron victory was odds on.

Our media generally seems to have little clue on how to report on French politics other than breathless reporting about Le Pen.

This tweet kind of sums it up. From Matt Frei.

Big win for EmmanuelMacron, European anthem underpinned the fact that it’s also big for Europe and Western values. Extreme right and Putin clear losers. And yet mood tonight at victory rally almost subdued. Can he unite France?

Well, no is the answer. Neither could Le Pen, and neither could any President before him, but if Le Pen won by a sliver, you can bet the first take would not be ‘can she unite France.’
