Frenkie de Jong

I think we offered what we thought was a fair £55m - £60m with £200k pw in wages, but Barça came in late & offered £65m to Ajax & £400k pw in wages to the player.

Like Sanchez, Cucurella, Pogba, Maguire, Fred & others before & since, we stuck to our valuation & personal terms & walked away when the auction started.

It could be a case of, if FDJ wanted to leave Ajax that summer, the Barça deal was the only one agreed with both the clubs involved & the player.

If a deal was agreed with City but FDJ preferred Barça when they made a late offer, would City go back in for him if it was the player who scuppered the deal?

Why not?

He would have been a fool to walk away from a deal that would make him financial secure for this life and the next and Barca were still a decent team at the time.

We are make errors in life, poor decisions but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I don't see what the issue would be if we went back for him, wages apart.

He would, but i can't see them paying the fee or his wages.
Now if he is willing to re-negotiate his wages for them, then we should be all over that regardless if Bernie stays or not.
With what scousers paid for Nunes I think they would pay top dollar for the top transfers they want. Allison and Virgil for example too.

Alongside Rio?

He would be a big missing link, allowing them to retain possession. A disaster, as you say.

Thankfully, he hasn't seemed keen and could have joined Chelsea last month.

Have to hope he only wants City if he moves to England and will hold out for that while his club try and sort the finances; even if he waits until next summer.

I do find it very odd that City have not tried to get him. Maybe his salary at Barca and therefore his expectations on pay are too much: City will not pay him what he is reputedly on at Barca.

Rags have signed some shit in past but this lad Is top class really hope he sticks to his guns and fucks them off as well as any other prem side

Hypothetical time..

Bernardo stays with us but De Jong goes to United or we swap Bernardo for De Jong?...

I hope so. Hopefully it's not a case of a bloke being told a date was cancelled because the woman had a better offer from a dude with more prospects.

If she came back 3 years later saying she made a mistake, would it be "We all make mistakes" & he picks up where he left off, or "It's part of her character & an approach from another better prospect in the future would end in a similar decision"?

I suppose this will dictate City's position. Agreed, it all depends on the circumstances surrounding the ending of negotiations. I just find it odd that if City were interested, Bernardo wanted Barça & FDJ would be happy at the Etihad, why a deal couldn't be hammered out?

But that's the issue, we don't value De Jong the same. United and Chelsea are agreed at £65m.

We value Bernie at over £80m.

I’d personally take the hit and offer Bernie for De Jong, no transfer fee involved.

If Barca reject, then it’s an easy sell to Bernardo that they don’t value him at a reasonable £65 million so he stays another season.

If Barca do accept, offer FDJ the rumoured £300k p/w Bernie was being offered in a new deal.

We probably lose out in regards to the valuation of both players, yet we get the best possible replacement for Bernie who wants to leave.

Clearly there is an issue with us and FDJ, money, attitude, twice bitten, who knows.

Shame because he would be some sort of compensation for losing Bernardo.

We'll see, but they haven't got any of the Coutinho money left to fall back on, plus even if he agreed to a pay cut he'd still want big wages.

We have gone back before, so don't see that being an issue.

Alexis Sanchez used us at Udinese to get a move to Barcelona.

We went back twice more after.

Didn't Laporte also have a rethink, but after a broken leg?

I feel like Laporte's situation (deciding to stay and rehabilitate at his current club and signing a contract that gave Bilbao a bigger release fee for his eventual move) was slightly different to a player using us to get more money moving to a different club

No chance of us just getting FDJ for mega bucks and keeping Bernardo till next season?

I cant see a world where we would expect to take arguably Barcas best player and then ask him to take a paycut.
He loves being there and hes paid a shed-load for the privilege.
If he was willing to take the paycut hed just do it and stay.
This is just all a non-starter.
