Future of football

Sure it will come, a 180 view of everything (360 for united fans) where you can watch the crowd etc at time as you do on a matchday would be good.

When Im pissing my pants in a care home Im sure it will be a very welcome break in the day.

Smoking near the toilets might even still be a thing :)

I’ve seen that. I think it was maybe rags v dippers. Folk sat in a bar and the screen is fucking huge, like being there.

Natural progression with tech suggests all sorts will happen in the future. I’m just glad I went to the games before all this. Frozen cold, watching shit, paying shit for shit beer and shit food. Stinking toilets. Some absolute twats who don’t shut up all game. Wouldn’t have had it any other way. As fancy as this is, it’s just not really football now is it?

I remember going to Watersheddings to watch Oldham Rugby league. I would have only been around 9 or10 yrs old (we used to manage to slip in via the dog track after the game had started) but I will never forget the stench in the gents "toilets". They were a number of large flags propped up vertical and a couple of pipes to supposedly drain the piss away.

That’s one from yesteryear, watersheddings. Is that still there?

Sounds like my house :)

There isn't a mass market for commercial domestic VR, especially when it comes to movies and TV. It's been affordable for ages, and it's settled into what it's likely to always be: a niche secondary technology primarily for gamers. Most people just don't want to sit with a computer strapped to their face.

Meta are doing some seriously Impressive things with VR development. They're currently losing over $4billion every single quarter at the minute and showing no signs of slowing down that level of investment, they're fully on board the VR train.

The previously movie only idea of people having normal sized VR glasses that are untethered is something that is not a million miles away anymore.

It's currently niche and expensive but big jumps are regularly being made with the tech and the price will drop eventually, it's certainly not going to be a popular thing in the immediate future and who knows whether Meta will continue to sink 10's of billions into it every year but if they do, in 5 years time we could be looking at a future where there's a VR takeover of everything, including sports.

Yeah, I know all that. Meta also went all in on the "metaverse" which currently seems to have collapsed even with Trump's backing and crypto-bros making some money out of it. The VR stuff is an outpost of that. It's not and won't be getting mass adoption for the same reason 3D TVs weren't the future despite Hollywood ploughing money into it. Meta have more money than sense, and haven't had much success out their core, wildly successful, business. Cost isn't holding back VR, it's cheap! Lighter heat sets will help, but ultimately people don't want to sit in their living room with tech strapped to their face. It's been five years away from mass adoption for about ten years, but yet... I'll see you back here in five years!

I'm not anti-VR, I actually think there's some interesting things happening in the sector, but I don't think the "seat in the stadium" model will ever, ever be popular enough to warrant associated broadcast costs. The best seat in the stadium isn't a scratch on traditional broadcast for immersion and entertainment.

It won’t be a massive headset like you think though it will be a pair of glasses, they will replace phones. You will have basically a HUD in your glasses, sound from either the glasses or headphones. I can see it where you choose an app where the lens blacks out and becomes VR for stuff like this.

I’ve seen the big screen they did in LA and it’s almost like been there view wise but listening into podcasts about VR there’s the very real possibility of been able to buy a virtual seat with the best view in the stadium I can see that taking off hugely with the price of VR coming down. I know as I get older and the thought of sitting amongst a lot of day trippers it seems more appealing

Blimey, keep watching…they’re going to throw a great big bouncy ball around to each other in a minute. Those who know, know, if you’re memory is that good;)
