Future Transfer Deals

2 years gives us chance to buy the next 2 years of talent from the EU right? So in 2 years, our excellent u18s teams (mostly Brits/Irish aren't they?) will be closer to the first team. I don't think it'll harm the quality on show in the prem, at least not for MCFC with our world class academy. This is absolutely fantastic for British/N.Irish (assuming we remain a U.K.) coming through MCFC. Other clubs have a responsibility to invest in their academies now. The lack of competition from EU talent will obviously be a benefit but I wouldn't worry about a drop in quality in the prem with modern academies - we'll just see a rise in quality of Brits/Irish in my view. Considering this, the home nations should also see a rise in quality of players when this decision bears it's fruits.

In the long-term I reckon this is good for our football, but a hit on the mega-money culture in U.K. football (less investment from TV. etc due to reduced no. of EU stars), which could be seen as a positive in reigning it in.

The lack of quality in Britain is as a direct result of a lack of proper coaching at an early age, how will this change?

Our academies are improving, this will force the hands of clubs to invest more in academies.

TBF it could give MCFC the edge over other teams in the league (in the years to come) if our academy is of such a higher standard - which obviously isn't necessarily a good thing for league competitiveness.

Is there any evidence that they're improving? Not being a smart arse just genuinely curious.

The huge investment into BPL clubs, the pressure to produce homegrown talent, this ref. obviously puts more pressure on producing good, homegrown talent (considering homegrown quotas). It can only be positive for UK national players.

I'm not favouring either outcome of the ref. on this btw. I do feel sadness for young EU players who want to move to their dream clubs in the UK and in the case of MCFC (and the like-minded clubs), learn from world class coaching systems, or in the case of MUFC, learn from err... or develop with err.... be part of a great 'istory, for the length of their... err, teens.

If your a Ukrainian (or similar country in football spotlight terms) teenager and emerging football talent, the number of world class/professional clubs to develop you is significantly reduced - and this is a very sad aspect of the result (in footballing matters - as well as for other professions of course) unless we negotiate freedom of movement terms that allow them to come here for their offered contractual length at least.

You may well be right but for me it's a case of I'll believe it when I see it.

The problem in my opinion is the lack of UEFA licenced coaches in Britain, kids aren't being thought properly from an early age, the sooner the cost of coaching badges becomes less prohibitive the better as until it does I can't see how much of a general improvement can be made.

Yeah I do think it's culture as well. Our grass roots is so far behind other countries. Have read Aguero's book and the grassroots football in Argentina seems so much better setup and respected. He played 6 games at weekend at one point.

I think we need more funding for indoor football and better tournaments setup for grassroots - it might seem a petty point but I really do think the amount of rain (especially in Manchester) puts off youngsters getting out and playing football for long hours of the day.

It will have a very serious impact on the academy if the UK leaves the EEA. For example if UK leaves the EEA there would be no future versions of Denayer, Brahim, Haug, Fernandes, Kongolo, Dilrosun, Maffeo, Angelino, Bytyqi, Celina, Denis Suarez or Manu Garcia and potentially Byrne or Lawlor. That's just off the top of my head. The likes of Cesc and Clichy would no longer happen.

Don't think it will come to that but as it stands all bets are off and we wait and see.

There is no way this was factored into the Sheikh's planning and it does have a potential to devalue all premier league clubs depending on free movement agreements.
But that's my point, Brahim aside perhaps (he really looks like being exceptional) all those players you name, we have players who could easily attain that level and they're already here and overwhelmingly English.

I just picked all the players that are currently or very recently there. My problem with your logic is that what you imply is that there a lot of technically good English footballers who will benefit from this. No doubt City have some very good English talent in the youth setup but there is no guarantee that they'll make it.

Say we have to go shopping for English players to fill out our squad who is technically good enough play for us? Other than Hart or Sterling I can think of Rose, Stones, Dier, Ali, Wilshere and Sturridge are about it. So 6 players good enough to play for us. So 6 players being fought over by every top club.

It strikes me that a ban on u18 talent will mean lower standards unless there is a fundamental change in coaching in the UK, if not player who previously wouldn't have been good enough will make the grade.

How can they possibly know that? They don't know what the new rules will be after we leave.

It is known. These are the present work permit rules for non EU nationals - which will be applied across the board. The govt isn't going to loosen the rules but they may tighten them further.
