Sad to hear that Gail Halvorsen died last week at the ripe old age of 101.

Gained fame during the Berlin Airlift, after dropping Candy & Chocolate to children in Berlin via home made parachutes, earning him the affectionate name of the 'Candy Bomber' or 'Uncle Wiggly Wings'

Also went on to do a lot more humanitarian work around the world for years after this.

Top Bloke. RIP

Gail Halvorsen, Air Force transport pilot known as the 'Candy Bomber,' dead at 101 | Daily Mail Online

Good documentary on youtube about him (and the Berlin Airlift) below

Especially when you consider the aircrews flew round the clock in all weathers for a year to keep a city supplied, and one of them was killed approx every 3-4 days.
All those aircrews were something special
I worked for a guy many years ago whose father was a bombardier in WW2, he was in the air when they dropped the big one on Nagasaki. I met him and he talked about the worst thing being the temperature they worked in, everything frozen
