My son is 6 in September, he loves playing mario on his ds, and the games I have on the GameCube (luigi mansion, mariokart etc). I also have an Xbox myself. Anyway I was going to get him a 3ds xl at Christmas but am now thinking of just going for a wii u as I feel he will probably end up wanting one. They look pretty good, and mariokart 8 is due out next April. I myself haven't really even played a wii. Is it the smart choice? The wii u instead of the 3ds?

Wii U pal!

As he has a DS already he will then have best of both worlds!

For me, leave the 3DS aside. There is do little difference between it and a normal DS. With the Wii u, you will get all the new releases, plus all the older Wii titles can be played on it.
Plus, you can play with it's firmware and put all the Wii titles on a hard drive and play them from there. (Better explained in a PM if you are interested, as its a little bit dodgy) :-)

Agree with sticking with Nintendo for young kids. They do family-friendly games better than anyone else.

I know a couple who unwisely bought their 8 year old a PS3 including Call of Duty and the poor little lad would freak out and shake violently when playing it, then have nightmares every night. Not the best parenting I've seen.

3DS is good fun but a little bit gimmicky and also may not be the best choice for his eyes if he's the kind of kid who plays like I used to (glued to the screen catching Pokemon for 12 hours at a time).

Wii U is a good choice, especially if he already has another portable console.
