having had a couple of days to reflect i still feel gutted really, i know we have moved on but reading the independent's article at 11.03 cook was in the airport and milan even then had asked for a figure to close the deal - where i think cook was naive was that he misjudged the pressure kaka himself was under, and the fact that once milan had broke the confidentiality agreement, thus pumping the stakes up, that cook would have the luxury of the same amount of time to clinch a deal. he didnt - even hughes said it was now or never. on the thursday mark bowen said "we're really close" - by saturday hughes said "we're a million miles away"- we'd lost control and should have fought fire with fire. milan are a club that has been done for match bribing, they are sneaky, cook isn't a football man and didn't understand it wasn't a nice busines dela he was concluding, he was up against a propaganda machine and to avoid the scenes we saw on monday night, should have called it off earlier or been ready to offer the right amount.
kakas dad asked for figures and cook asked for more time to come back with figures, milan saw it as the decisive meeting, cook didnt have the final figures ready, surely he'd realised this might have happenend once he turned up on the monday - trying to negotiate on milan's terms in milan's ground with thousands of milan fans outside 2 days after 65,000 milan fans had gone beserk. we could have regained a modicum of control had we asked for the venue to be moved or at least insisted on kaka being omitted against fiorentina. cook never asked for this to happen.
kaka had had people outside his house for a week and no doubt didnt want things to drag on for another week - he was in on the deal from the start , milan had agreed to sell so milan would have told him about city - forget this my heart is in milan bullshit from kaka, he'd have come if the money was right - kaka would have already indicated to city what money would have been right. if he wasn't the right man in cook's eyes for the club then why call it off at such a late stage ?
anyway, sorry to drag up old wounds most people are looking ahead now, but i just feel to go over there and not get your man, to have a limited amount of time to conduct business, to have mis-read how the situation changed between midweek and monday, i think the arabs will have the final say on this in the summer
