General Videogame Thread

I just took Mass Effect: Andromeda off pre-order after seeing a game play video.... looks good visually, but game play generic as fuck.

It's Mass Effect. It's your standard 3rd person cover shooter. You don't buy Mass Effect for it's combat you buy it for the story and the universe exploring and interesting races and characters.

It's not just the combat though, it's how everything transverse, it was scan a rock, activate terminal, fight, Scan rock, activate terminal, fight.... in that exact order.

I'm hoping that I'm wrong, but I'm going to wait for player reviews, because as far as official reviews go they can be a bit bias, especially with AAA games, so it'll get 8/10 at the very least.

I remember buying the first one because it was a great RPG from the makers of KOTOR, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate. It had both great story and great combat, in which skill choices and XP points made a difference. It's a shame that the combat has become so sterile throughout the series.

Review embargo lifted at 11pm for Zelda.

Glad I got this already ordered. Can't wait to play Zelda on the Nintendo switch tonight.

Not surprised about the hype with Zelda. Think the reviews are being massively over rated.... these numbers indicate that it's the best game ever and from what I've seen it looks good but no where near 10/10... In fact I watched the ign review and the guy points out some noticeable flaws yet still gave it 10/10?

I think nostalgia has played a massive part on this and it'll most likely be a 7.5-8/10 game. Not worth paying a shit load for a switch anyway, maybe get it on the Wii U if anyone has one.

I agree. Was watching Twitch users whilst in work and to me it looked ok defo didn't look a 10/10. Think I'll stick to my Horizon Zero Dawn for now which so far is fantastic.

Can we have some proper HZD feedback please? Why is it fantastic? How's the story? How nice are the controls?

HZD's story is... ok, even if I hate the dialogue. Combat is decent-to-pretty good. World is a bit empty. Mostly really pretty and atmospheric.

ME Andromeda is going to suck preeeety badly. Wish I'd said it when I first realised, for guru status. Weightless weapons, bulletsponging, dumb AI. Enviroments are boxes and ramps. Movement, cover, UI, camera is awful. Tacics don't exist. Deeply unoriginal skill tree / powers. It's just stupid. But most of all - the dialogue and characters. Wow. Noooot good. The general witing is abysmal, compared to... well, we've got Witcher 3, obviously, but even something like RE7 was far more compelling and involving.

But Andromeda is pretty much a prime example of everything that's wrong with AAA gaming right now.

I'm buying Nier: Automata instead. Platinum have nailed a fascinating environment and responsive, adaptive, expressive, creative gameplay and controls. Taro's story is reflective, mindbending, emotive and has thematic weight and depth. Way more thought provoking than MGS V's story, but less insulting, in a game with a lot less repetition and grind.

Zelda is a different approach but better, a more natural gameplay experience, and a 'less is more' approach with dialogue, environment and world building... it really works tho. The game is a lot of fun and very involving believe me, even if there are a few annoyances. I'm tempted to go into debt just to get a switch and complete it

I'm not interested in For Honor, but I admit the combat is well put together. Everything points to Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Mount And Warblade 2 being much deeper games.

Two point and click adventure recommends:

Night In The Woods.

Four Last Things. Utterly bonkers and pretty damned funny, plays like Monkey Island, looks like a Terry Gilliam cartoon. Short but very sweet.

Any real wierdos out there should be checking out Oikospiel.

Have you played Mass Effect: Andromeda as its not out for another 2 weeks? Or are you just judging it on the recent videos which have been released?

I have the game and it is incredible. Game keeps getting better and better. Easily the best game I have ever played.

So yes the hype is legit and it is worth the 98 it currently has on metacritic and all of the 10/10 and 5/5 review scores that it is has got.

The game is a masterpiece.

I find Nintendo fans are a bit like Apple fans... their opinions are greater than everyone else's and if they say it's the best thing ever, then it's the best ever!
