Geronimo Rulli

I have said it before....this looks to me like insurance. IMO Pep wants ter Stegen. It is unlikely that we will get him though. We can probably force Bravo to push for a move by targeting ter Stegen. If Bravo comes in, Rulli is our long term solution at Keeper. If we somehow do get ter Stegen, we don't activate the clause and make a few pounds off of him later. Really quite elegant when you think of it.
 
Rulli extends stay at Real Sociedad amid TPO speculation


Argentine keeper Geronimo Rulli has raised speculation signing for Real Sociedad until 2022, mere weeks after transfer to Manchester City.

Further confusing an already complicated affair, Real Sociedad officially announced the acquisition of Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

On July 18, Manchester City struck a deal in the region of £4million with Rulli's parent club, Deportivo Maldonado in Uruguay's second division, who had the player on loan in San Sebastian since purchasing him from Estudiantes in 2014.

It was known Rulli would see out his loan until December, following which, the Basque club could have an option to buy 70% of his rights.

A statement on Real Sociedad's website confirmed the 24-year-old Rulli has signed until the end of the 2021-22 season, but no further details were made available.

Having firmly established himself as number one goalkeeper at the Anoeta, Rulli is currently with the Argentine Olympic squad at Rio 2016, playing in both group games thus far.

His availability for Real's La Liga opener at home to Real Madrid on August 22 will ultimately depend on the Olympic tournament, with the final in Rio de Janeiro taking place two days prior.

Meanwhile, Rulli's connection to Deportivo Maldonado raises further ire in relation to Third Party Ownership, with the club accused of being a bridge team for the sale of South American players, by exploiting Uruguay's lenient tax regulations.

Set up in 2010 by UK racehorse owner Malcolm Caine along with London-based lawyer Graham Shear, Maldonado made £8.58m from the transfers of Alex Sandro and Marcelo Estegarribia, without either, like Rulli, ever playing a game for the club.

Ultimately, Caine and Shear receive backing from the Stellar Group, a London investment fund headed by Jonathan Barnett, the protagonist in Gareth Bale's £85m transfer to Real Madrid.

The possibility of Rulli returning to Manchester City remains.

City have an option to bring Rulli back in 2018, but despite reports during the summer, new manager Pep Guardiola is content with Joe Hart as his main goalkeeper for the time being.

Real Sociedad reached an agreement Monday to sign goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli on a six-year contract from Manchester City.

Financial details of the transfer weren't disclosed.

The 24-year-old spent the past two seasons on loan with the La Liga club from Uruguayan side Deportivo Maldonado, which agreed to sell the Argentinian to City for a reported £4-million fee this summer.

Rulli never played a single minute for Maldonado, a club that's gained a reputation as a middleman for transfers involving South American players.

City has yet to announce the transfer officially, but Real Sociedad's statement seems to confirm Rulli's move in a complex deal between three parties.

Spanish reports indicate City retains a €14-million (£11.9-million) buyback clause that it can activate up until 2018.

Rulli will continue to play for La Real on an initial loan basis until December - at which point he will become a permanent member of the squad.

It's just missing approval from the English FA, which is waiting for official notice of the transfer from Maldonado.

Rulli, who's currently representing his country at Rio 2016, made 36 La Liga starts for Real Sociedad last season.
 
How time flies. He's been a great servant to the club and I, for one, will miss him.

PS - Wouldn't he be a great trivia question?
 
If Guardiola likes the look of Rulli why didnt we just wait until the end of the transfer window and sign him, or better still sign another GK much earlier in the window? Guardiola must half heartedly rate him to have wanted him if the other main targets failed. Or am I missing something here? If Guardiola does not fancy Caballero/Hart and he made Rulli a target, why not sign him and play him?

Or is this purely a money making scheme and he will never sign for City :o?
 
Think this deal is to keep the pressure on both him and hart, he will know city will have one eye on him and if he plays well enough a big money move is there for the taking, and joe know if his standard drops below the required level we have a top keeper who could take his spot as soon as the transfer window opens.

He is not ready to be out number 1 presumably.
 
The purpose of this transfer is to put an ownership stamp on one of the best up and coming keepers in the world.
As a player can't be transferred twice in the same window, we have loaned him to Real Socieda.
They buy him from us at the next window but there is then a buy-back clause so we get him for some specified amount if we want him further down the line if he comes good.
I expect to see a lot more of this in the future as it will save us a fortune in the long term.

Think we will buy a new keeper this window, get rid of Caballero. Have New Keeper and Hart as GK's. Most likely new keeper (Bravo/ter Stegen) will be number one.

Then sell Hart next summer and bring Rulli as number 2.

Can't see that happening to be honest.
Rulli will be no.1 if good enough, I think this transfer is solely to prove that very fact. He wouldn't want to be a back up.
IMO this deal has been made as a back up plan to buying Ter Stegen, or it could also be if Bravo were to sign for a few years, Rulli would then replace him as number 1, once he's ready.
