Gerry Adams BBC Libel Case

Best place to do it , particularly if no one can present proof you are lying - you get a nice payout.

The BBC are a bit quiet on it. It should happen more when journalists write what they want will no real evidence.

The first part isn’t correct, or at least it wasn’t yesterday. The BBC love a bit of self-flagellation when things like this happen, which it did yesterday.

Completely agree with the second part though.

Horrible man, is it alright to call him that?
Was very calm and dignified by all accounts.
Thanked opposing council after questioning.
Knows how to handle himself in the spotlight.

You can call him anything you like, it being your opinion.

I might be more careful about stating fact though.

Yep I can’t think of any other media organisation that’s anywhere near as critical of itself as the BBC, it’s one of its best assets.

If they won they case it would have been the national news section on their website rather the NI regional new section.

A higher than average pitched singer being sacked from regional radio got similar coverage.

I suppose it is the same for all press though, a 4 page "exposé" followed by a 1.5" apology.

It was on the main news page when I looked yesterday.

I don’t think it is the same for all, like I said I think the BBC do self criticism far more than others.

Well the consensus from both jury minders, who are a similar vintage to myself, is that in their opinion the correct verdict was reached.

I asked why the case was brought against BBC NI, in the Republic. Well it seems Gerry didn’t trust that he wouldn’t end up with 6 Loyalists on the jury, which when you think of it, is probably quite logical.

Sinn Fein wouldn’t get the older vote in the Republic in general. I or anyone I know wouldn’t vote for them as we have issues with their historical links, but that is not a bias that the younger generation have.
As far as I’m aware, the jury selected were mainly under 40 years old.

Paul Gallagher who was Attorney General here, so very experienced, cross examined Gerry for 5 days on behalf of the BBC.
At the end of it Mr. Adam’s thanked him before leaving the box, which caught him off guard.

What I’ve been told this morning is that he was courteous to everyone involved and very smooth and charismatic. That account is coming from two people who have no high regard for the man. He was charming apparently regardless of of what involvement we think he has or had in the IRA.

The crux of the case however seems to be that regardless of of what you think of the man, the BBC accused him of giving the order to kill one of his own friends about a decade ago. They did so siting an anonymous source and left that report up on their site up to last week. I presume it’s been removed now. I don’t know.

You can’t just make accusations like that with what amounts to, no evidence.

I hold no truck in this at all. Like I say, I wouldn’t vote for him, but this will reportedly cost the BBC circa 2.5m by the time they pay all costs.

My old man did 3 tours in the early 70’s and it was an unwritten rule that this fucker and a few others were not to be arrested even though they knew of their involvement.

Quite why he feels the need to disavow his membership rather than own it I’ve little idea?

It’s not as if he is going to be ever prosecuted is it?

I believe the **** is quite charming though.
