On a rare visit to the Northern Quarter I got chatting briefly in a pub to an elderly bearded scotsman. He told me he was Gerry Rafferty's estranged older brother and amongst other things had featured on and helped to write several Rod Stewart tracks. I wasn't sure whether to take all this with a pinch of salt but a day or two later I did a bit of googling. Surprisingly the bloke in the pub bore an uncanny resemblance to an earlier photo of Gerry Rafferty's brother Jim Rafferty and furthermore, much of what he said was chronologically accurate. I read that the feud was bitter and irreconcilable and recent times for Gerry have been, to say the least, weird and illness ridden. Was this old bloke the genuine article - he seemed well known in the pub?

Could have been ..... although i wasn't aware that Jim had left Scotland ........ but time goes by and Jim may well have done , or he could have been visiting for a month or two and taken a 'shine' to the place ...... i can't find much on the guy to be honest , very little news , hardly any photos.

His other brother , Joe , died in 1995 ...... and Jim would be about 68 years old now.

As you say Gerry Rafferty , himself , hasn't had an easy life , often going missing , reclusive , and in bad health , it seems a lifetime ago now since 'Baker Street'...... and then there was that bitter fued between the two of them ....... there must be so much that those two remaining brothers could tell if they really wanted to ...... and i could well imagine a backstreet pub in a place like the Northern Quarter would be the type of place that people like this would be found in , enjoying a quiet drink and looking back on their lives. .

Met a randomer in a pub in Belfast who told me he'd played with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Clapton etc back in the day and that he still tours Eastern Europe once a year and has a huge cult following in Bulgaria.

I once told a lass I was called Gerald, she told her mate she was talking to a guy called Gerald, I got praised for an awesome tune and got given beer.
