Gio Kinkladze Documentary

Most overrated player in city history. The fact that some of you think he could play in the modern city team is laughable. He ended his relevant professional career in the championship with Derby at the age of 30 and couldnt get in the Ajax team after leaving us.

We got relegated twice with him in the team ffs.

He wouldnt get anywhere near the premier league these days at the level it is now at and you’re all blinded by nostalgia and match of the day highlights.

Yawn

I'd get goosebumps if anyone today dribbled past players like he did. Bernie does it a bit, sometimes Jack, but Kinky was a master at it!

remember when Shaqiri would pop up with the odd amazing goal on match of the day? but then youd watch a full game and realise he was a chubby usueless **** 95% of the time?

see also Ryan Fraser

Will never forget his goal against Southampton.....the last time I had a fight....the local shithouse punched me in the side of the head and the red mist came down and I batterd him...as someone who doesn't get into much bother my mates still talk about it to this day lol

I bought one of those huge posters of him from a guy selling them after the game, got home and ran upstairs to put it on the wall next to my bed. My wasn't happy and made me put it in my son's room.

Right place, wrong time.
Would have love to see him under the likes of Pep to see how he could have been nurtured and improved

My memory of Kinkadze like some others starts with that Tottenham debut. He was a signing on a different level from what we were used too. His touch was sublime, his speed and acceleration were exceptional and everything looked so effortless. You did not need to be a genius to see we had signed a player of tremendous ability.

That first season was the true Kinkladze and in most home games especially, he did some truly memorable things, often coming close to some extraordinary goals, beyond those that he actually scored. Although a great player afterwards, whatever anyone says, his speed and dribbling were at another level at this time and his fitness levels were good also.

I remember watching first team training from behind the fence at Platt Lane as some of us used to do back in the day. It may have been pre- season for following year. They were doing shuttle runs and Geo decided not to do any, instead lying down at the side. Alan Ball watched on and let him get away with it. The general feeling you got was that the other players and staff were in awe of him and he could get away with anything he wanted. Saw him out quite a few times in the nightclubs with Nicky Summerbee and although he never looked really drunk, his lifestyle and levels of commitment meant for me he never reached those first season levels again. The club at the time was a lot less professional and if someone like Pep had got hold of the young Kinkladze, God only knows what he could have achieved.

I really do not buy any of the comments made doubting his ability. These people clearly do not properly understand the game. He was a true genius, playing for us in the wrong era and someone who had the ability to play in any of our modern era teams.

Cheers to Kinky and of course the King! Let's celebrate our legends, including those who played in the good and bad times of our underrated history (by outsiders).

I was in Amsterdam when Gio was with Ajax. Spoke to loads ofAjax fans but nobody had anything good to say about him, their reasoning was that he was not a team player. It was the time of total football back then and Gio could adapt. Each to their own.

personal, I thought he was amazing

He was the only ray of light we had in our darkest of very dark times. I absolutely loved him and still do. It was worth paying the entrance fee just to watch him in those days, and that is why he is a City legend and rightly so.

Compete bollocks.

The manager that signed him for Ajax was sacked that summer so Kinky never got to play in the position he was bought for.
The new manager true to stick him out on the left wing.

As for getting relegated twice with him, I say the relegations would have been a lot worse without him.

I think this is a good perspective and thanks for posting.
Ive always maintained Gio is up there with the greatest of all City players and like you say his dribbling at speed was mesmeric.
However I’ve tended to blame the other players mainly for him not achieving more than he did and the fact you say he was best in that initial season when he had better players seems to back that up.
However, you seem quite firm that his training and poor lifestyle negatively impacted and to be honest I’d never taken that so seriously.
But you hav

im saying facts and you’re giving opinion.

he signed for city and played one season in the premier league and we were relegated.

at any point a premier league club could have come in for him - he was in his ‘prime’ years. they didnt.

Joe Royle showed up and said he couldnt undestand the ‘cult’ around him and said he was more of a negative than positive on the pitch.

He showed up at Ajax and another manager came in and decided he was crap and dropped him. He wasnt even given a squad number the second season he was that shit.

Was dropped by Georgia for fucks sake

Went to Derby on loan and then
permanently. Wasnt even first choice and was regularly a sub. in the champo.

Fantastic player, a genius on the ball and bar Messi, Maradona I have never seen a player which such balance on the ball and ability to beat a man.

Abiding memory for me would be the 10 minutes after he scored against West Han in the cup. He was like a magnet to the ball, orchestrated everything and the crowd was completely captivated. Only comparison I can think of is Agueros debut v Swansea.

Loved him and will always be my favourite player
And what a cracking goal that was against West Ham!

He got Derby’s player of the year in 2002-03 so he couldn’t have been that crap could he?
