Manchester City have seen a second bid rejected for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given.
City are believed to have had a £5m offer declined on Tuesday before increasing that to £6m last night. Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear said: "Shay is a top-quality goalkeeper and the last thing I want to do is lose him."
After losing out on one Brazilian superstar and simply losing another, Manchester City returned last night to something like normality, spending £17m on Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong and holding talks over a third bid for Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz.
The fee paid to Hamburg for De Jong takes the club's spending this month to £39m, including £12m on Wayne Bridge and £10m on Craig Bellamy.
De Jong has flown straight to Tenerife to join Mark Hughes and his new team-mates at City's warm-weather camp. The club's executive chairman, Garry Cook, said adding Santa Cruz to that squad depends on Blackburn's success in acquiring a replacement for the Paraguayan.
