Manchester City have seen a second bid rejected for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given.

City are believed to have had a £5m offer declined on Tuesday before increasing that to £6m last night. Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear said: "Shay is a top-quality goalkeeper and the last thing I want to do is lose him."

After losing out on one Brazilian superstar and simply losing another, Manchester City returned last night to something like normality, spending £17m on Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong and holding talks over a third bid for Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz.

The fee paid to Hamburg for De Jong takes the club's spending this month to £39m, including £12m on Wayne Bridge and £10m on Craig Bellamy.

De Jong has flown straight to Tenerife to join Mark Hughes and his new team-mates at City's warm-weather camp. The club's executive chairman, Garry Cook, said adding Santa Cruz to that squad depends on Blackburn's success in acquiring a replacement for the Paraguayan.

Whats the point in offering Newcastle £6m? They are never going to accept that.

If Hughes really wants him then just offer the £10m straight out.

Ex-fucking-actly.

If you want to prise a player away, you need to make an offer that cannot be turned down. In this case, I think that offer would have to be £10m.

Apart from the FACT "Big Joe" cannot catch a ball,
he cannot distribute a ball
he cannot organise his defence.....and doesn't even talk to them
he cannot kick a ball
...and looks like Woody Woodpecker which bit of him being crap dont you get?

For Gods sake, I cannot stand turncoat James but look at the way the guy controlled his defenders against Spuds last week. His distribution of the ball from leaving his hands led to a goal 19 seconds later.

Wake up and smell the cordite, the flak is flying at Big Joe otherwise we wouldn't be in the market for a replacement.

Agreed. Unless that is that Given is desperate to come and with each slightly increasing bid he will be putting more pressure on Kinnear- almost to the point of going on strike! I reckon its important with Given & RSC that we don't pay over the odds so as to be able to have realistic-ish negotiations with other clubs in the summer.

or at least an offer closer to the player's market value? we're paying over the odds so far but we're not paying beyond what other teams would pay (even Real will end up paying a lot for Kaka i imagine, and 60MM in summer is about 90MM now). at least 10MM if we really want him, although the club may be stalling in hopes of signing someone better...
