This is well worth remembering when someone throws ‘sportswashing’ at you…. Some academic research has been undertaken showing how nations accentuate their ‘attractiveness’ through sport. In essence you could argue this means sportswashing. For those wondering….

The UAE is 21st behind Portugal and just ahead of Norway! The USA is top, UK 2nd…

You can see it all here:

This is genuine academic research which should be considered, so those who liberally throw the word sportswashing about need to at least recognise that the UAE is 21st, not number 1 or even number 2, 3, 4 etc.

IMHO the BBC and Sky have sportswashed the rags and the scouse so much it's a wonder their badges can still be seen.

One day the Guardian or Times will condemn sportswashing by Arab owned clubs, or by the Russian, or Chinese, the next day they will be supporting the English national team.

Was just going to post that myself, so thanks Gary. And Delaney can fuck right off.

Miguel Delaney immediately responded to me on Twitter when I said he was a hypocritical **** for slagging off City but still going to Qatar.

I'm in Tenerife and was a bit tiddly but he said he had a duty as a journalist to cover Qatar as it was a global sporting event.

He denied ever saying as a fan base we are complicit in "sports washing" and said he had sympathy with our position.

When I questioned whether horse racing and boxing were held up to the same scrutiny as our ownership he said they certainly were.

Horse racing... you mean the complete lack of "sportswashing" related reporting regarding wealthy people from Middle eastern countries.

Google "horse racing sportwashing", the top results are:

Literally no-one (compared to City's coverage with "sportswashing") is constantly going on about it. The Irish times, home of that "tired and emotional" Sweeney character who dives into City at every opportunity he's paid, was a surprise to see...as such a recent piece.

The Saudis have dominated the Tattersalls yearling sales and a lot of the Newmarket stud farms since the 80's to my knowledge. But I've not seen any vitriolic pieces of journalism about this

Sheikh Mohammed literally chained his daughter to a radiator and nobody gives a fuck. Godolphin got a bit of bad press when they were found to have foiled a possible triple crown winner with a doped horse (pinned it all on Al-Zarooni when he certainly wasn't acting alone) but by the by they are seen as the jolly boys in blue. Khalid Abdullah (Frankels owner) was an absolute gent by all accounts though.

I hate that bitter bald fucker.

The Maktoums are Dubaian Emeratis and are the largest investors in UK flat racing but other Saudis (eg Khaled Abdullah) invested heavily too but he wasn't a leading Saudi royal.
He's dead now but his executors have carried on the operation under the name of Juddmonte.
