for a week at end of month. do i need to apply for an ESTA visa?

Get the ESTA (not a visa so long as you hold a UK passport) but do not pay for it, some sites are very clever and will extract money from you for filling out a form. Print out the number they give you and keep it with your passport. Have a great time.
Ps – I can recommend the Bronx Zoo if you get the time.

You can get the Esta off the website it only costs $14 and it lasts for 2 years. I was in NY in November, I thought Vegas and LA were top destinations but New York blew them away.

When I last went to the US last year, I got my ETSA off the US Embassy website & it was free from there. Unless it's changed you should be able to do it on the link below. If you do it online it normally is confirmed straight away.

correct, there is a fee now as above - it is valid for as many trips as you want for two years.
