Good article in Guardian football about De Bruyne and Silva

Covers Hart and some insights into what concerned Guardiola and covers De Bruyne and Silva, an issue that has bothered me.

Silva has looked back to his best. Silva to me has to be the heart beat of the team, and KDB will have to slot into a functional role, but that will minimise his effectiveness.

That's not how I read the article. Doesn't it suggest that Silva and Kev have been asked to play similar but complimentary roles as 'free' no 8's. I don't see that as a functional role, but one that requires a great deal of football intellegence, discipline and imagination. Both players have the capability to thrive and I think they will forge a partnership under pep that will become an awesome offensive weapon.

Seems like a reasonable assessment to me.
Doubt Pep will employ the same tactics against PL opposition as against Steau midweek.
Can he out-tactic MH? We shall see.

I think Silva understands the roll better then Kev at the minute but I think it will come with time. I could see Kev moving wide when Gundogan is fit.

Silva plays in the Spanish national team where the concepts are similar. Gündogan will slot easily in as well because of Tuchel and Löw's concepts who are based on similar ideas. (In difference to the other Dortmund players he never had problems in the German national team).

I think that once Gündogan is fit, it will be either KdB or Merlin who makes way for him.

I'd have thought perhaps Sagna (Fernandinho taking his spot) would be more likely with Gündogan sitting in Fern's previous spot.

Like Bayern in reverse, with Dinho moving from midfield to full-back, as opposed to Lahm going from full-back to midfield? ;-)

Fair enough, we all have our opinions and see the game differently, but there's only one opinion that matters.

I've only just read those articles (fascinating stuff) and they both seem to pinpoint Sagna in particular of the fullbacks as struggling a bit. Sagna is one footed whereas Clichy (from memory) is right footed naturally but his father told him as a young lad that there was a dearth of top left sided players and got him to constantly play with his left foot. That's why Clichy is two footed.

I remember the greedy sick-note saying something similar when he was still with us.

My six year old grandson is football mad. He is right-footed and I told him only the other day that he should practice as much as possible using his left foot.
