Well, if he believes he was right he should stick to his guns and not backpeddle and pander to Maildom. It was, a crass comment . Its an emotive subject that should been better brouched , with the use of dignity .

I imagine if he'd failed to qualify his statement and 'stuck to his guns' you would have criticised him for being out of touch and insensititve. To describe a figure of the magnitude of Ken Clarke as insignificant suggests you are unable to view anything he says with any degree of objectivity whatsoever.
Good point

If the purpose of his comment was to made the judicial system better ,he has failed. If his object was to stir up memories for those affected by the subject, well done that man. Sorry but in my opinion more fool him for making the comment in the way he did. There are better more eloquent ways of putting ones point across ,especially without a big grin on his kite, its an emotive subject after all. That was his folly.

I think he was trying to say that if the accused pleads guilty in the first few weeks of being accused they would get a distinct reduction of time served where as at present it can go on for more than a year or so and then they plea guilty and get a third knocked off. It would save the victims dignity, time and of course tax payers money. Distinguishing between "different" types of rape is a grey area at the very least.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at but not as clearly. He's trying to encourage offenders to plead guilty as soon as possible after being charged to save the victim having to be dragged through the system.

Which ever way you look at it, you can now get 15 months for rape.

Anyone fancy going 3 ways on a sentence? Only 5 months each....

These 2 got 11 years each. Considering the fact this seems to be a "your word against ours" scenario, I am glad there was a conviction and a relatively severe sentence.

Rape should really warrant a life sentence. In many ways it is worse than murder.

It's a lot more difficult to determine tho
So someone goes back to a girl's place with her after a night out and a few drinks. They start snogging and he gets her clothes off without any protest then she suddenly decides to keep her legs together. Or doesn't but decides afterwards she should have done and cries Rape.

It's her word against his and you're suggesting he should get life if the jury believe her?

If she decides to keep her legs together, yes, he should.

If she makes it up afterwards then no, he should not. If anything she should be the one up infront of a jury.

As I said however, it's very hard to determine. I wasn't making a practical point.

Someone made a good point about rape and murder and how if they're the same crime/punishment then the rapist may as well kill her.
